Solved cant get virtual surround sound, with dss2 and turtle beach x12, pc

so i brought the x12 headset and the dss2, i have no problem getting surround sound on 360 and ps3, but on pc dolby digital doesnt work, the dolby digital light only lights up when doing the test in audio device properties, i can slect dss then test and i get sound and the light indicater lights up on the dss2, but then it goes out and stays out, i want it for playing pc games dont care about anything else, i just feel ive wasted money buying the dss2 for pc, i thought the dss2 handles everything.

im using onboard audio, realtek, latest driver from the asus website, i got a p8z68-v mobo

FYI, if the sound you are outputting from the PC is not encoded in Dolby Digital or DTS, etc. you will not be able to get digital audio on the headset. Have you tried playing a movie encoded with either DTS or Dolby Digital to see if it occurs then?

thanks for the reply no i have not tried it, i just wonder whats the point in the dss2, what does it actualy do, obviously it gives virtual surround sound but i thought it handles all the deonding and stuff, i dont even know what decoding means but ive been told i need a sound card with ddl, id appreciate it if someone could recomend a sound card that will make this work, as cheap as poss please, i havnt tried it cuz i dont have anything like that by the way

Your MoBo handles Digital Audio onboard. If you play a media that is encoded with DTS or Dolby Digital it will work. Not all games are encoded with DTS or Dolby Digital. If they are they may not be multichannel. The only thing that a Sound Card is going to do beyond what your MoBo is already doing is that it could send a "virtual surround" signal to your headset. If a media was not originally encoded with DTS, or Dolby Digital, or any other multichannel audio, the only way to get multichannel playback is to force with virtualization. Virtualization and True surround are not the same.

yeah i kind of understand, i mean i bascily just want the virtual surround sound to work as advertised, wich should mean the dolby digital indicater light on the dss2 will light up meaning its working as it should, like when i do the test and the light comes up, i know its not proper surround sound only virtual but thats ok, id just like it to work as it does with the 360 and ps3, are ps3 and 360 games allways encoded in dolby then??

I can't tell you 100% that all games for 360 and PS3 are multichannel encoded, but if I had to guess, I'd say yes.

thanks for the link its very much appreciated, saves me the headache of trying to find the rite one, then having that thought of it might not be the rite one,its ok if you know wht your looking for, someone else also suggested the same one but a dx, can i ask one last thing from you, when using headsets, what would you say is the best configuration, some have said its better not to get the gaming hadsets with virtual surround and that its a gimmick and its better to get a good sound card and normal headphones but good ones, any thoughts??

TBH, I don't use a headset. I use 7.1 surround sound from a surround receiver to speakers. If you want advice on headsets, I'd say to start a thread asking about what a good set of headsets are. I know most of my friends use these Sennheiser USA - Headphones - Personal Audio
