Can't Hear Midi Files on Hard Drive

I cannot play a midi file that I have on my hard drive. I also get an error message, class not registered. I can load a web page with a midi embedded using IE10 and hear it fine. I cannot hear it with Google Chrome.

I disabled WMP on my computer because it is evil and I use either Jaangle, Zune or Media Monkey to play music. A midi won't play on any of these.

Any help at all is appreciated.

Normally, HTML pages will have a player included so that the Midi commands can be decoded. If you disabled WMP and didn't change the program association(s) for Midi files then Windows doesn't know what to do with them.

Go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Associations then report back what is set as the Current Default.

I had already done that. Could it be that those three music programs can't decode midi files?


In the meantime, I enabled WMP and will only give it access to .mid files so it can't get into my music library and wreak havoc. I can now hear midis from my hard drive.

I also found out that midis (or any background music) can't be played with Chrome. Kind of a bummer as I was getting ready to make my annual Christmas e card and I have a lot of friends who only use Chrome....

I don't do anything Google and don't know what your other programs do so I can't help there. I'm an MP3 guy myself.

You will need something that can play MIDI files. MIDI files are "data" and not "audio" thus it requires a player that include a MIDI Synthesizer or that can use the built in Microsoft MIDI GS Wavetable Synth.
