can't install Adobe Reader DC - VC++ Redistributable needed

I attempted to upgrade my Adobe Reader 9 to Adobe Reader DC and could not. I got an error that api-ms-win-crt-string-i1-1-0.dll was missing. Some poking around appears it is from VC++ Redistributable 2015. My latest Redistributable is 2012. I thought the whole point of the redistributables is that the software that is dependent on it, includes it in its install??? Maybe that model is gone.

I am very reluctant to update my trusty but old W7 with something with broad impacts after running for 11 years smooth as silk. I havent done upgrades or installs in a long time intentionally. It seems to be the path of least resistance. Everything is humming along happy as could be and not being impacted by incompatible installs which do happen -- especially with older software that I still run and depend on.

And I know from experience that dlls coming and going can wreak havoc in surprising ways. I am extremely risk-averse

Is this perhaps NOT one of those times to be concerned? Odds of smooth installation? side effects elsewhere? Another PDF viewer? ha ha

I'm not even sure a restorepoint would give me comfort but I guess I could do that for some assurance.

I also wonder if the latest Adobe Reader DC is supposed to work on W7??? after that api is resolved, maybe something else will choke.

I just thought to search C:\Windows for that dll and it is there, but in a weird (to me) place:

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_avast.vc140.crt_fcc99ee6193ebbca_14.0.27012.0_none_a45421ee27ef60f7

By the name of it, seems that the product being installed brought it along, just like I initially thought should have happened here.

Thanks. It's not a reinstall. It would be a first time install. I wanted to know about the risks of potentially destabilizing my old system.

When you do the install, right click on the installation file and select "run as administrator." From the looks of it, you're using Avast as your anti-virus and it might be blocking it. You could also add the installation file to the Avast exclusions.

installing VC++ Redistributable 2015 should put the file you need in the system32 folder where it needs to be. disable Avast shields before the install.

I understand your problem completely, thus my possible solution.

Are you aware that the Reader connects to the Adobe Document Cloud Service? Not sure why you want that instead of something like Adobe Reader X.

That's interesting. I was trying to find out about all the differences in their product variants and name changes. My research showed that DC is now the latest and greatest reader for all. Doesn't require cloud usage. (although I read a lot of user complaints about the interface and attempts to use cloud)

During my research I also found the archive of older Readers. I might try that route instead of risking my system with new runtime libraries. I don't want to open a can of worms. I think Reader10.0 might be fine. I assume thats a/k/a "X". Hopefully, it is architected in a way that the installer includes all the required pieces.

According to this- Adobe Acrobat Reader DC it's connected to the cloud. As you said, you might be able to disconnect that part of it.

There's really no risk in removing/reinstalling the C++ redistributable as suggested by billmcct. However, I'm running "X" with up to the C++ 2013 redistributable and, if it only requires the 2012, then just substitute that for 2015 in billmcct' suggestion. I don't know if the Adobe installer installs the C++ redistributable if it's not already installed.

I also don't know if "X" has specific features you're looking for.

Respectfully disagree. Most windows software utilizes some version of VC++ redistributables. Multiple versions can reside on one system though, so I wouldn't be uninstalling anything -- which does reduce the risk. But as a software engineer of 30 years, I can assure you there is risk! I would say that I was mostly concerned that they didn't architect the package properly (by yesterdays standards at least!). All dependencies should be accounted for in their installation package. If I had gotten past that one, there probably would have been something else missing down the road.

It didn't, but X1 did. First I had to install 11.0 and it was awful. kept crashing. 11.0.23 (last) was fine. A little trickier to install a patch version from archives, but done and done.

Note that XI does have Acrobat cloud support available, just not so in your face as DC I think. Still a lot about XI I don't like. Too much stuff and clutter and sidebars and crapola and crazy menus. I liked previous simple versions. But is it what it is... I hear there are other PDF Viewers around. Maybe next time I'll go looking.
