Hey,

I'm having a problem getting Windows Update KB980846 installed. I tried last night, and the update hung on 100% complete. I finally had to shut down the computer, by the power switch when it locked up on the "Shutting down" screen. I rebooted and the computer is fine, but KB980846 says it wasn't installed.

Should I just try it again, or do I need to take steps to troubleshoot the problem first?

Thanks!

Try again in safe mode. If the update is not important, you can decide if you want to install or hide it.

OK, so I guess I need to make that decision. I'll let you know how it turns out either way!

KB980846 Memory error

Guys, I am also having big trouble with KB980846.
[Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB980846)]

Trouble started really with the last round of windows updates, I am on x64 Windows 7. Had to retry 12 times to install the frameworks updates, finally could, after manually restarting installer service.

But KB980846. Nooooo , Let's see: It installs OK and asks for pc restart.
After system restart I get the following message box:

The instruction at 0xe9a7e2f4 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program

THIS APPEARS 4 OR 5 TIMES AT SYSTEM LOGON. The only solution I found is to uninstall the update.
Before I "ignore" or "hide" it in windows update settings I am trying to find out what's going on. I read arround the net that a lot of people have problems with the last round of windows updates.

IDEAS PLEASE :(

Looking at all this, I think I might be better off just skipping this update. Thanks for the suggestions though! I'll definitely remember that link if I ever have problems with a more important update!

theog, I already reseted windows update. Update is NOT the problem, it updates OK, the problem is KB980846 that AFTER updating generates memory read errors. I don't know if I can saftely hide it because even if it is a compatibility kind of update for old proggies maybe something else in the future will depend on it???
