Hi, yesterday I bought a new hard disk (WD320AVJS) since my previous hd was damaged and it was crashing all the time. when I try to install win 7 or 8 after loading windows files I get this error:
kernel is missing or corrupt
I've also tried to install win Xp and I get BSOD after loading windows files and I was even unable to install Ubuntu, an error occurs during copying system files. but I'm also unable to install OS on my previous HD, I thought there is a problem with my last BIOS update so I installed an older version of BIOS but the problem still exist.
CPU : i3 2120
Board: P8Z77-V PRO
Ram: 2GB Kingston x 4 (KVR1333D3N9/2G)
HD: Western Digital WD320AVJS

I would try to run the WD diagnostics from here: WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD AV

The issue though, is that they have a Windows version or a DOS version. Since you can't get Windows installed you can't use the Windows version. Do you have access to an external floppy drive? If you do AND can create a DOS bootable disk, then you can use the DOS version of the WD Diags to test the drive.

Another thought is to see if the drive works in another machine. If you have access to another machine, unplug it's hdd and plug in the problem hdd, then try to install there.

It's possible that there is something else wrong with your computer (SATA controller on the mobo?) which may be the real reason your original drive was crashing.

Other Info
Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
As I mentioned I have the same problem with my previous HD which was working before I tried to install the new HD and I've also tried on a 3-rd HD. I have another PC, I haven't installed OS on all of my HDs, but they all pass "windows is loading files" part without this problem.
And thanks for the quick reply.
