I've got a windows 7 and only have one account for me. However, I just made a standard account for my brother, but whenever I try to log on his account, it logs in but then logs off before it goes into his account and then goes back to the first screen with my account and his account. I can log into my account with no problems, it's just his. Why is this happening?

Sounds like the account is corrupt, why not delete it and create another. That will probably solve the problem.

I've done that a few times. It seems that it can't log into any standard or guest accounts, since it worked when I set it to administrator and didn't work when I tried a guest account. But I don't want to set his account up as an administrator, I don't know why it's doing this. when I log on, it says setting up desktop or something and then says logging off after that and takes me back to the first screen with all the users.

OK we will get this fixed. Try this in order.

Go to search type cmd, do not hit enter. Right click run as administrtor. In the cmd prompt type sfc /scannow. If errors are shown run it 3 times.

If that does not work try a repair install.

I will check back tomorrow. If the above does not work, leave a much information as possible and I will try to help again.

Run in safe mode and see if that works.

Boot computer, while booting hit f8 repeatedly and quickly. That will bring you to safe mode. See how things work. If they do, we will be able to fix it..

If nothing that I suggested works, try creating an administrator account and then changing it to a standard account. Let me know how everything works out.

Thanks richc46, you're really helpful.
Unfortunately, I've scanned it and it showed that it's ok but logging in didn't work; tried safe but didn't work; and I've tried setting it to an administrator and then changing it as well to no avail. The funny thing is, about two weeks ago, I made a standard account and it worked perfectly, but then I deleted it, and now whenever I create an account other than an administrator account it doesn't log on.

Good, more information. Use system restore to go back to the point that you could create the account.

OP and richc46: I have seen this problem before, but for the life of me I can not remember the details or how to fix it. It is super late and I need to get some sleep. I will check-in in the morning and see if I remember or you have solved it.

I've done system restore but it is still doing the same thing. Maybe I haven't gone as far back as I need to but I don't have any more restore points. I've also checked out the netplwiz and tried it but didn't work either. :(

Unless you have other problems, you have restore points that go back more than 2 weeks. When you are asked to select a restore point, on the bottom left there is a box, you check it to get more points. Try again. SR should work.

Here is what I was thinking about:

Originally I had a problem with my profiles logging in with a TEMP profile but then later I was not able to log on at all here is what I did: (Note parts of this are copied from several other web sites and edited to post here the relevant parts)

1. Logon with Admin Rights
2. Open regedit and go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.

Here you can see all SIDs of loaded profiles and probably you'll have some of them repeated but with .bak extensions.

3. To fix your profile, desktop icons, etc... you have to delete the profile with no .bak extension and rename the other, deleting only the .bak extension of it:

Ex: In Regedit (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList)

SID-1292428093-343818398-2115-158554 <- Delete this Key
SID-1292428093-343818398-2115-158554.bak <- Rename This Key to SID-1292428093-343818398-2115-158554

4. Restart your computer or Logoff and Logon with the profile that you want to restore and that's all, your profile will be restored Perfectly.

If that does not work then do this:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control
Key: RegistrySizeLimit
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: ffffffff
2. Reboot
3. Run sfc /scannow
