Cant map drive to VPN connection

Hi - i have created a VPN connection to my server - authenticated and connects perfectly. My problem is that i cannot access the files i need - i cannot map a drive to my files.
Please can someone assist me with this. I am getting more and more confused with the network setting on Win 7!!

* If your computer is part of a HomeGroup and you access files from another computer in the HomeGroup, remote libraries and accessed files do not appear in Jump Lists on your computer. This issue also occurs in environments where Folder Redirection is used to redirect users’ libraries to a server.

To work around this, navigate to the remote files using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path in Windows Explorer and then drag and drop each item to the taskbar to pin it to the appropriate Jump List. For example, instead of navigating to \Libraries\Documents on the remote computer, you should use \Users\username\Documents.

Are you attempting to map the drive when the vpn is connected?

What error are you getting?

Yes - trying to map a drive when connected but cant find server or shared file
Will have a look at the jump list option and report back!

Try pinging both the ip and host name of the machine, sounds like a dns issue to me.

I thought I'd add to this similar thread instead of starting a new one.

I'm trying to map a network drive from a VPN client (Windows XP Home) to a VPN Server (Windows 7 Home).

The folder I'm trying to map is definitely shared in the Windows 7 Server machine.
I'm using the "standard" process as described here: Map Network Drive - How to Map a Network Drive in Windows XP Using Windows Explorer

I cannot see the folder on the XP client and when I type in the UNC given by the Windows 7 server I get the dreaded "the network path could not be found" message.

Incidentally, I can ping and telnet into port 1723 from the client to the server with no issues. Also, on the Windows 7 server I've made sure the network is in "WorkGroup" as I've read that XP machines require this in order to connect.


I'm really stuck; any ideas?
