Solved Can't open any programs!

Hello all,

Somehow I can't open any programs on my HP laptop. THe specs are 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, Windows 7. Some programs will open, such as the registy editor, command prompt, things like that, and only a couple of normal programs. Often times I have to open them in a roundabout way, such as using a saved file (like Word file) or things like that. Running programs as Administrator doesn't work. I've tried a repair install. I've done sfc.exe several times. I reset the .exe extensions as were some other instructions, nothing works. It seems like most of the programs will open in safe mode, however. What should I do?

Sounds like it's virus infected (short of you being in the habit of turning off the computer improperly).

Download msert.exe from Microsoft's site, pick the appropriate type (32 or 64 bit), save, and run it. Depending on how large your HD is, it may take some hours. Msert is time sensitive, and is good for 10 days (new download is then required).

Thank you! I will try this. I usually do try to turn it off properly, so maybe it is a virus.
