Can't open Excel 2010 files for some reason?

I am having problems trying to open Excel files by double clicking them for some strange reason.

If I create an Excel file then save it for some bizzare reason it won't then open again by double clicking it. I have tried to go into the choose default programs but I can't find Excel 2010 anywhere, so what I done was to create an Excel short cut on the desktop and then tried to use that as the default program but I get the following message:

C:\Users\********\Documents\*******\********\****.xlsx is not a vaild Win32 application.

(I have used the *'s instead of the proper path)

Have you tried right clicking on an xlsx file, choose Open With, and browse to the excel.exe? I don't have 2010, but mine is in

C:\program files (x86)\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.exe

Choose the exe and click always use the selected program...

Good advice, A Guy, if it's 64 bit 2010 the path would be
""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE""
