can't open files after some time.

before explaining my problem, i'd like to say that, i formatted 3 times and made 4 different fresh installs of windows, and nothing has changed.

so, after installing the windows, i download the latest versions of different programs(like live messenger, utorrent, acdsee etc.), and i install them. no problem so far. they're running smoothly, and don't cause me any troubles. BUT after some time, icons and files related to those programs i installed stops working. for example; i try to open a picture, double click it, and nothing happens, acdsee doesn't open(also checked the processes tab in task manager, it's not in there neither). and i have to right click it and open with windows' default viewer.

or, i download a torrent file, double click it, nothing happens again.then i say "i'll just open utorrent and drag the torrent file to the program"i i try to open utorrent, double click it, guess what? same thing happens, can't open it. and then i say "maybe utorrent is broken or something, why don't i just install it again from the setup that i just downloaded few minutes ago", i double click the setup file, again, nothing happens..and i also noticed that, when i run the setup, that security window pops up saying:" are you sure u want to install bla bla" and in the Publisher part, it says "unknown publisher". what the hell? i just installed it few minutes ago and i've seen the publisher's name in that spot....and here's the best and funniest part : when i download the same setup again, it works while the old one still doesn't.. and of course after some time it also stops working..

i'm looking for a solution since the x86 rtm came out, and couldn't find anything yet, and this driving me crazy. i hope u guys can help me, otherwise i'll need to install vista again i guess.

Hmmm... Interesting problem... As ZigZag noted, it would probably be wise to install one of the anti-virus suites that run on Windows 7, even if it is only a trial version, it may give you some insight into the problem (if it is possibly a virus or malware)... Has this been a problem ever since you first installed Win7, or has the problem showed up sometime after your first install, and you have been reinstalling over Win7 to try to fix the problem? Have you tried a repair installation or a fresh install on a different drive (or PC) to see if this alleviates the problem? Maybe your HD is going bad?

Do you have another Hard Drive in your PC (or that you could put in your PC) that you could try to install and run the OS on instead to see if you have a bad HD? It almost sounds like you have a hardware problem...like a bad hard drive, or a bad mobo, or bad ram... Does your PC over heat, or is it overclocked? Are all your cables and components fully seated (plugged in all the way) in your PC?

Is/was there a time when the OS was running fine on your PC? If so, can you remember what changes you may have made (e.g.: programs installed or settings modified), even if they are seemingly insignificant...?

One more thought... How did you install the OS? Did you install it from a burned DVD? If so, maybe it was not a completely good burn and some of the system files were corrupted during the process... If that is the case, you may want to try to get a hold of the .iso again, and re-burn it at a lower speed...

I'm smelling a rat here. My first impression tells me you have downloaded one of the screwed builds out there, with Trojans and bots on board.

If it was a heat problem, you would have problems during install also, and probably wouldn't be able to even finish it.'

Try finding an untouched build. You can find the hashcodes if you use the search option on this forum, to check out if it is indeed untouched.

Maybe bad media? Try to reburn the install DVD at a lower speed if it is possible...and do a clean install... As squonksc said, maybe you have a virus, hence the reasoning behind my initial comment that you should download an anti-virus software, even if it is only trial, just to see if that is the case... And like squonksc noted, make sure the hashes for the original .iso that you downloaded match those of the legit RTM copies floating around (the legit hashes are posted all over and are not hard to find)...If they don't, I would be concerned that you may have a bad copy that has been tampered with...

BTW, with PCs, I never rule heat out when it comes to strange stuff like this, as I have heard of some bizarre stuff occurring due to heat issues, especially with overclocking... Like random errors in Windows and what not... Like a friend of mine (actually, he is a guy I used to work with, and who is not too bright apparently), who built his PC during the winter months and had no problems, then when summer came around, he started having serious issues with his PC...turns out until he upgraded his cooling system with burlier fans and it went away... (He is a cheapskate...lol) ...he thought it was a virus at first, but after multiple scans comming up clean, he noticed that no "problems" happened until a little bit after the PC started up (about 45 min or so, every time he would play any newer games), so apparently he opened his PC one of those times and felt the heat-sync on his CPU and it was burning hot...so he bought a couple better fans and problem solved...this was a few years ago...

Yeh...sounds like you got a tampered build... You will probably end up having to reformat and do a fresh install... I would wipe the HDD and reinstall an un-tampered version of windows. You may need to create a bootdisk with your AV software to run prior to windows starting up, in order to nuke the virus, as it probably infected system files that cannot be cleaned while windows is running...hopefully your PCs MBR is not infected and you can then format and reinstall a clean copy of windows...and if your MBR is infected, hopefully booting with an anti-virus bootdisk will be able to clean it...if so be prepared to then reboot after you scan your PC with the bootdisk, and reinstall with a virus-free copy of Windows.

are you sure that it's because of the windows build i have?

i have 5 drives, can't the virus infect even a formatted fresh drive from another drive?

It could be, then again, it could have come from something you downloaded after installation, thats why I said to check the hashes against known good versions of the build to ensure they match...as it would do no good to reinstall if your source is virus-laden... Either way, it is very risky to run your PC with no anti-virus software, as you have certainly found out :-/.
Before trying to reinstall from the same source, I would check the sources validity by comparing the hashes of the .iso you downloaded to the hashes of known good copies...

...I am hoping that the source for your install is a genuine version from a trusted source...or you may have to revert back to Vista until you can re-download a proper .iso if you think your version may be tampered with...

I would assume not, but anything is possible I guess... Its worth a try... I have never had issues like this before since I have always used anti-virus programs. I would say go for it. If that does not work and you still have the virus, I would either try to have a friend download it and burn it for you or worst case, reinstall your original copy of Vista and start over with a clean system...verify it is virus free (by installing anti-virus & scanning), then upgrade Vista to Win7, or clean install over Vista...

I had a similar issue when using rocket dock and\or media encoder screen capture.
I had to right-click icons, double click didn't work.

are you downloading from the infected computer?

if not for security purposes you should try to use a different machine as you will need to burn (you essentially need a executable program that can burn a file which will become infected pretty much the moment you open it...) a disk image...
from the looks of it it should not infect anything but executables
but as always check the hashes just in case (if you are moving the file to another computer then check it after you moved it)

also delete any and all exe's that have touched that computer as the have a possibility of infection...

if you are using another computer to download and burn still check the hashes and then format the computer that was infected...
