Can't Open Mail Restored from Back-up

Before I installed Windows 7, I backed up all my data files to my external hard drive. Now I am having difficulty getting my email files into my email program. I reinstalled Eudora Mail, which I had been using, and was unable to restore the files. I decided to install Windows Live email and see if I could import the files into it. No dice. I managed to restore the files to a folder on my desktop.... I have tried to open them using Eudora, but they simply do not open. When I try to import them into Windows Live, they can't be found.

I don't know what else to try.

Now if I could just get all those email messages I THOUGHT I had backed up so I could get them back!
