Can't open programs, uninstall or install

I have been told by Sony to back up my personal data and perform a system recovery using f10. They say that this will remove any virus.

Prior to the issues, my husband tells me that he had installed Vuze. He was watching a video online and the computer shut down. He did say that there was a Windows update and that on reboot it kept trying to install "1 of 11" but never actually did anything.

I am going to back up my files and then do as Sony has instructed me. I will let you know how it goes.
