Cant Partition Or Format D Drive! Why??

How come i cant partition my D Drive. The option is grayed out!

Any ideas

You need to boot the installer before it will make the Custom install Drive Options available.

I'm asking out of curiosity, but given that Windows 7 includes a screenshot utility that works perfectly for posting images on this forum, why would any 3rd party app be needed? What features does it have that aren't present in the Snipping Tool?

Oh yeah i was getting that ready for my downloads from Bittorrent. Ill do it just now...

You don't need a separate partition for that, especially one located before your system volume. I'm a big fan of not over-partitioning a drive.

Too many people forget the age-old motto: K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid. No, that's not meant as an insult. That's just the saying.

In other words, FAR too many people ignore this concept, and set their systems up with crazy configs...simple because it lets them. Always remember that just because you can do something, doesn't mean it is the best way. Simplify your setup, and you'll have less issues down the road...which is what we are all after.

There's no need to be condescending....just simplify and follow good, known practices.

Hello mw2, welcome to Seven Forums!



If you wanted to recover the space ahead of the system volume you could use the info in Option Two in the tutorial at the link below, it refers to the "System Reserved" partition but the steps are exactly the same and you could even make the system volume as a "Primary Partition" while you're at it with the same Partition Wizard program.


Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

In order to recover the 12gb Unallocated space into the C:Win7 partition, C must be converted from an Extended Logical to a Primary partition. It is always best to have Win7 on a Primary partition anyway, since Logical can never be marked Active to recover the System MBR into it should that become necessary.

You also get slightly better performance by having Win7 on the preferred lower left-hand address of the HD closer to where the disk reader parks.

Read over the Partiion Wizard tutorial which BarefootKid wrote/linked above, boot PW CD, rightclick Win7 partition, select Modify>Convert to Primary, OK. Then rightclick again to Resize, drag left grey border to the left to take up 12gb Unallocated space, OK. Apply all Steps.

Yea your partitions made me scratch my head. LOL Just use the Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD to FIX your Partitions.
