I had XP installed on a hd and decided to install my windows 7 upgrade on a second hd. Now that I have windows 7 installed I cannot remove my XP hd. By that I mean when I do remove it 7 doesn't boot up. I get a message that says:
CLIENT MAC ADDR: 'bunch of numbers' GUID: 'bunch of numbers'
DHCP....
I tried removing the XP hd and running startup repair 3 times like I read in another thread. Here is a picture of my disk management.
Copy boot folder from D: to C: (both at root) and tell it to skip over copying bcd and bcd.log when it asks.
Then open an elevated command prompt. Copy and paste this following command to it, then hit enter:
bcdedit /export C:\boot\bcd
Reboot into bios and make the C: drive the default boot drive.
Boot to Windows and check disk management that C: is now the system drive. If so, you may power off the machine and remove the XP drive permanently. You could also just format the partitions on the XP drive and leave it in the machine so it's usable. Or simply do nothing here and keep the data on the XP drive.
You can use msconfig to get rid of XP on the boot screen so it goes straight to 7. Type msconfig in the start menu search box, hit enter. Use the startup tab.
