This is my first post so I apologise in advance if I have posted in the wrong place.
I have windows messenger in my quick launch bar just to the right of the start button.
Every time Windows 7 fires up messenger launches.
I don't want it in the quick launch bar.
I think it might be pinned to google if that makes sense as there is no option to unpin it from the bar only the option to pin it.
I want it off the start menu and off the quick launch bar.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just wanted to make sure you understand that Windows 7 does not have a quick launch bar. You can pin items to the taskbar. Being in the taskbar does not make it start automatically. I'm not sure if I understood right. To delete the item from the taskbar, right-click on it and click "unpin from taskbar".

I dont have messenger so Im just guessing at the answer, for what would work with other appl.

Go to msconfig and stop messneger from starting at bootup

or

go to services and set to manual

To perform these actions

for msconfig go to search type msconfig
for services by going to search type services

If you do the above, then follow Johnathan good advice, not only should it be gone, but it should not return.

I think I know what you are on about..

I am guessing that you don't want windows live in the taskbar on the left, only besides your clock area .. am I correct ?

if that's the case, right click on the launch icon, go to properties and from the tabs choose 'compatibility' tick the box 'run this mod in compatibility mode for' and choose windows vista service pack 2... click ok and that should be it.

jonregester, if you have set up 'quicklaunch', then right click on the messenger icon and choose to "remove this shortcut".

Just wanted to make sure you understand that Windows 7 does not have a quick launch bar.

Sorry pal it's just that your quote is a bit misleading (if you look right in the bottom of the box you will find the "quick launch bar") :p Even though by default Win 7 does't have the "quick launch bar" enabled, it does have it if you want it. I was just trying to clarify this. :geek:

Update

Firstly thanks for all your help
The icons I am talking about are in the area to the right of the start button.
I managed to stop messenger firing up on start up
However the icon is still there and I don't have the option to unpin it.
Thanks again guys

If it no longer starts up, when you boot up. YOu should be able to get rid of the icon. Try going to notificiation area in control panel. If it is listed just select the option you want.
