First I want to say I am computer illiterate but I can explain what is happening and what I have tried to do to correct the problem. I hope this is the right section to post this.

Problem: I run 12 Yahoo Groups Paint Shop Pro related groups.
I save and create signature tags and graphics. I do NOT have many stored on my computer but have them on a My Book external hard drive. I also use Incredimail.

Now I can save all my graphics at this time on the IM program BUT when I click Save As and go to place the tag on my external hard drive - the program stops responding. Sometimes after 5 seconds it allows me to save it - other times I have to close the program and try again. The same thing happens when I go to select to use a graphic from my external hard drive or even one that I have saved on the "C" drive. The program stops responding.

I have tried it using IE, Firefox and Google Chrome - same thing happens. It also happens in my Animation Shop program and Paint Shop Pro program, I can't select graphics to use. The program stops responding.

I ran malwarebytes - it found nothing
I ran Advanced System Care - found nothing
I ran ccleaner
I ran Iobit Security 360
Did a Norton Virus Scan a few times - it found nothing
Did SFC /scannow twice and both times it didn't find any integrity violations

I have no idea what to try next. I can read my email fine. Navigate Web pages fine. There isn't anything else I can see wrong except saving and using graphics in emails and in my paint shop programs.

Please help  Thanks in advance, Ilene

I will try to post a screenshot but to save the screenshot to my computer to post here may be a problem as that is the problem I am having.... Saving graphics to my computer. The program stops responding and doesn't allow me to save it.

I already have CCleaner and have run it about 100 times.

What I do

When I see a graphic I want to save:

I right click my mouse

I choose "Save Picture As"

It then opens a window displaying my K drive which is my external hard drive where I save all my graphics.

Then I find the folder where I want to save the picture

Then when I find the folder I click on SAVE

Now the graphic used to save quickly and the window will disappear BUT now I see the little circle telling me the program is doing something and then on top of the window it says NOT RESPONDING

So then I need to open Task Manager

And try to get that window to close

OK. Right click on "Drive K" or whatever it is called in your system, and then click on "properties" you will get this box;

Click on "Disk Cleanup" and see what options it gives you.

After you have run the cleanup, click on "Tools", run "Check now" and then "Defragment now";

This may take quite some time if you have never done it before.

You should only use CCleaner and the Windows Disc cleanup utility. I would advise you to uninstall the "Advanced System Care" and any other "Optimisers" you have installed, they only cause problems.

Just letting you know that I am defragging the "C" Drive and it is still going. It has been an all day affair.

It is up to pass 8 at 89%

I have done defrag's before using Advanced System Care and also Smart Defrag 2 and it has never taken this long. My experience has been when I do a scan and it is taking over 10 hours it is going to freeze and not finish.

Do you think the defragging and the disc cleanup will solve my problem. So far the problem is still there. Hugs Ilene

Yes, I think the main problem was massive fragmentation on your external drive. Defragmenting this can take a very long time to complete if you have never done it before. Once fragmentation gets beyond a certain level it causes problems with file access.

That may not be the only problem, but we will see when you have finished defragmenting.

I also think that one or other of the "optimisers" you loaded has deleted some services or defaults and messed up your drive(s). Once everything is running again we can set your defragmenting program and other things back to automatic so that you don't have to worry about them.

The fact that a defragmentation is taking so long tends to substantiate this. It should not usually take more than a few minutes.

Various defragmentation programs use different methods. If you use one, and then another, the second one undoes everything the first one did. This can take a very long time. The defragmenter in windows is perfectly adequate when set to run automatically. It will keep your drives running properly. There are cases where other defragmenters may be useful, but the built in Windows defragmenter is invariably the best for home users.

There may of course be some problem with your drive itself, or some other problem entirely, but we can only check that once we have eliminated other problems.

Mike, did you not want Ilene to defragment her External Drive (K-whatever) and not the C drive.
Sorry if I misinterpreted.
Cheers

Everything is done now and when I did the error checking it found errors and the fragmentation is done.

It seems to be working now - I tried it and was able to save the graphics to my external hard drive and also use them in emails. :)

I appreciate your help more then you know.
I was beginning to think that I had to set my computer back to factory settings. :( I also deleted all of the optimizers I had installed except for CCleaner.

Let me ask you about malwarebytes - Is that a good program to keep?

How do you get the defrag program to run on it's own?

Again for right now everything seems to be working - thanks again for all your help. I appreciate it! Hugs,Ilene

My pleasure Ilene, that's what we are here for. I am pleased to hear it worked out as desired.

Yes, Malwarebytes is a very good program to keep, but make sure you update the database in it every time you run it. ( Just click on the "Update" tab in the program and it loads the latest virus definitions etc).

Don't install any more "optimisers" ! Just about all of them cause problems. Don't use any other defragmenting programs either! Just run the clean up and then the defragment from windows once a week on your drives. If done regularly it only takes a few minutes. If you need help setting up the automatic defagmenting schedule, or anything like that, then just ask.

You can also keep using CCleaner, it doesn't cause any problems as long as you don't delete registry entries you are not sure about.

Have a nice weekend!

I will update the malwarebytes program each time before I use it.
Thanks for telling me that.

I won't install anymore optimisers. I just didn't know what my problem was and how to solve it so I thought the more programs I could run would help me locate the source. I am glad I found this forum. All have been deleted except malwarebytes and CCleaner.

Now it looks like my windows defrag program was set to run every Wednesday at 1am but to my knowledge it hasn't run at all. I know the "K" drive external hard drive that i have wasn't run at all because that is what it said next to that drive yesterday before I did the defrag.

Now CCleaner - How do I know what registries shouldn't be deleted? Under registries I have all of the boxes checked under the Registry Cleaner

I went to do an attachment to show you but the computer stopped responding and I couldn't add the attachment. I tried it twice and each time had to retype my message. The last time I was smart and copied my message before I tried the attachment feature.

IE
I have checked IE Templetes, Index dat.files and Last download location

Windows Explorer ALL Checked

System - All Checked but recycle Bin as i like to delete that manually.

I hope you have a nice weekend too! Hugs Ilene

The "optimisers" invariably prevent automatic scheduling of various things. Now that you have uninstalled them Windows may simply start doing them automatically again. If you want to, we can walk through setting them up now, or you can wait and see what happens on Wednesday! :)

When you write "Deleted" I hope you mean "Uninstalled"?

Actually, you probably wont notice anything unusual at all. Just that your drives will now keep functioning! Windows will also tell you the last time it ran a defragmentation if you look at your scheduler.

It is best to use the manual options for external drives, once a week, because if the drive is switched off or not connected etc. Windows can't find it.

If you are moving and changing a lot of files you need to do it once a week, if you aren't moving or changing much, then once a month is OK.

The more you move, delete, or change files, the more fragmentation occurs. This basically means your files get chopped into little bits spread all over the disc, and it takes Windows longer and longer to find all the bits again. Beyond a certain point Windows is unable to find them all and gives errors. Defragmenting puts all the bits back into contiguous file blocks. Basically back into one lump, instead of lots of little bits. A good analogy is a paper book. If you tear all the pages out and spread them around the room, it will take you a long time to find them and put them back in the right order. You can just pick up the book in one completely organised lump. Excessive fragmentation also increases disk "wear and tear" very considerably, and may also produce a lot of noise.

Don't worry about the attachments, not important right now.

CCleaner is a fairly mild registry "cleaner", but it is still very dangerous to delete registry entries you don't know anything about. This can crash your system. Uncheck all the boxes and just leave your registry alone. Removing a few entries, or even hundreds of entries, wont make your system run better or faster.

Yes, by delete I meant uninstall - sorry.

I do understand now to do the external hard drives manually. I am constantly adding new images to the folders in my external hard drive so I will remember to defrag once a week. As far as my "C" drive, let's wait until Wednesday to see if it does it automatically. I will let you know.

Okay I will leave the registry alone and unchecked all those boxes.

Thanks for all your help - believe me you'll know if I have other problems or if this same problem reoccurs.

I appreciate how fast you keep on getting back to me... If I can do it, you'll get more Kudo points. Hugs Ilene

The points are really irrelevant Ilene, it's just nice to help people and get nice feedback like yours. But it's the thought that counts, so thanks! :)

There is always somebody here who is willing, able, and will do their best to help you, if you have any problems or questions.
