Solved Can't see videos on most WWW sites.

Hi,

I'm using Windows 7 (64 bit) and MSIE 11.0.9600, and every time I try to watch a video that's on Kim Komando's website, it shows the page surrounding where the video screen should show, but no black screen to show the video on, and no video.

This also happens on some other websites, like Yahoo's news videos, but I don't recall all of the sites that don't work right.

Strangely enough, YouTube videos work just fine.

Any ideas? Right now, if I want to watch a video and it doesn't work on my desktop, I have to call it up on my cell phone and squint to see it.

Have a look at your browser settings, java could be disabled.

It would be more helpful and allot easier if you posted a direct link to the site and video your having issues with otherwise we have to do a search and it might be different than what your using

Most Youtube videos use the HTML5 standard.

Test your Flash version here and update if necessary.

There are two versions, one for IE and one for Mozilla based browsers. If you have both browsers, you'll need to update both.

Hi thanks for the additional info,
This particular video was 12 seconds long,
I first watched it with flash disabled no issues to report,
Then closed and enabled flash and went back to the site still no issues,
Temp files delete,
Run this as administrator and Start the scanner,
Shut your machine down after it finishes,

Now that is really odd - the bear video is actually on YouTube, but You said that you do not have the issue watching videos on YouTube.

Perhaps it's embedded videos. can you view the same video here?

I don't see anything that would prevent the video from playing. The only thing I can think of... and it's a long shot is to try Google HTML5 opt in.

Edit: Thought of another thing - make sure that javascript is enabled in your browser.

My thanks to all of your for your valuable assistance.

I was having another issue, too, where MSIE 11 was not moving when I'd click on any link after the 1st page, but fortunately, in solving that issue, it also cured my video problem.

So I finally got to see what Mama Bear did! And all the other videos I've seen on Kim Komando's website come through just great!

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, but after my trip to a convention, I had to undergo gum surgery (not because of the convention!), so I've not felt up to snuff until this afternoon.

I ended up resetting MSIE 11 twice, and now everything seems to be working just fine.

So the solution was to reset IE 11 twice? The issue wasn't resolved after the first reset?
That's odd, but an interesting thing to note - If a member is having IE issues and a reset doesn't cure it, I might ask them to do it twice.

Did you restart IE after the 1st reset?
After the 2nd reset?
Was the machine restarted after either IE reset?

So sorry to mislead you. I reset IE 11. Somewhere along the line, I was asked to accept default values, which, out of laziness, I did. When that process was finished, I closed all open windows and rebooted. As soon as I got into IE 11, I started getting bombarded with popup ads, so many at a time that they literally covered the screen I wanted to see, and each other.

So, I reset IE 11 a second time. This time, when asked to accept default values, I chose the only other option. When that process finished, I rebooted and restarted IE 11. This time, no ads, period.

However, I was still stuck with the problem of IE not advancing past the first screen after I would look up something. So I Googled a description of my problem and ran across a website where that was discussed. They talked about "browsersafeguard.exe" and explained how to get rid of it. I followed their instructions, and now, no more problem of IE not advancing past a screen. Something called "rockettab" was involved, too, and I remember getting rid of that, too.

I see, thank you for the further explanation.

Since you discovered tow malware programs, it would be a good idea to follow Thrashzone's suggestions in post# 10.

That will give your system a though going over scanning for other malware that might be lurking.

If I remember correctly there were four suggested scanners to use,
Adwcleaner was one of four,
Post the other three results,
Adwcleaner found a bunch of crap

You might even post your Uninstall a program list as well to see if any suspicious programs are there.

Thrashzone has the lead on tis thread, please follow his recommendations before following any of mine. Based on the logs, he might offer intermediate direction.

It's important to follow through with Thrashzone's recommended scans in post# 10 or you run the risk of reinfection. Each scanner has it's own strengths, and by running multiple on-demand scanners you stand a better chance of having a clean system.

Soooo, AFTER all of Thrashzone's recommendations, I suggest running ESET online scanner as an additional scan.

This scanner also takes a while to run, sometimes a few hours depending on the amount of data and number of disks.

I ran Malwarebytes (free) and I tried to attach the two log files, but got a msg saying the 2 .XML files were invalid. Any ideas on how to get around that? Apparently there weren't a lot of errors to correct - 30 or less, I think.

Also, since running Adwcleaner, my PC is running noticeably faster. Ixquick, the browser, is truly living up to its name, although I more often use Google and it's faster, too.

As long as you removed everything mbam and adwcleaner found you should be fine,

I would say you most likely should keep track of what you have installed in Chrome as far as Extensions "background apps" and make sure they do not run when Chrome is closed,

I know you marked this thread as solved.

You can export the Mbam logs as a text file and post that instead of the xml files.

I still recommend running ESET as a final check for malware.

Ran SuperAntiSpyware Tonight

I just ran SuperAntiSpyware (free edition), and it found 10 dangerous items and 128 adware cookies. The dangerous ones were in the registry with the name Hijacker.Tubby, and I had SAS remove them. SAS also said that the adware cookies were not dangerous, but they might keep track of sites I visit, so I left them alone.
