I am doing the remove read only at the top of the folder hierarchy because it seems to inherit down

I have clicked the read only box to get it clear and set apply
I have run as admin the attrib command, attrib -r c:\users /s and attrib -r c:\users|*.* /s
it seems to accepts the files version, *.* but not the folder version, \users, see attachment

what is up with this? win7 has to have its read-only way?
is it really possible to get rid of read-only?

Hello bbxrider,

Read-only box = (Vista and Windows 7) Default neutral setting that is always displayed. File is not read-only. For a folder, it means all files in the folder not to be set as read-only.

See if Option Two in Method Two of the tutorial below may be able to help with this. :)

attrib -r "C:\Users\*.*" /S /D

thanks for the help, It seems the read-only attribute was cleared from the folders that were giving me issues
I still have the read only box highlighted on folders where there is absolutely no read-only files and no read-only sub folders or files in those folders. So my take is that the highlighted box is confusing at best and terribly poor functionality, possibly a bug or defect at worst. amazing that such poor work is present on such a widely used operating system.

Um, no the check box in the properties is always a filled box in folder properties, been that way for ever. If you notice it is a square that fills the box, not a check mark, it is an intermediate value neither yes or no.

The reason for this, if you actually took the time to read the label next to the check box it clearly states it applies to FILES only.
