gpedit.msc

Are two that I have a problem with.

They open, but I get an error that says:

"One or more ActiveX Controls could not be displayed..."

etc.

I checked IE8 settings, and all is set to default. I have the latest vers of Adobe Shockwave player...what am I missing, or where should I be looking?

Thanks in advance!

It does sound like malware as stated by roncerr. Can you update Windows and your Security anti virus? If so do it and run a complete scan. I would also down load and update then complete scans with Malware Anti Malware and Super Anti Spyware.
Please complete you system specs. The more information we have helps.
Have you installed anything new?
What anti virus program are you using?

Thanks guys for the help.

Services and gpedit are part of Windows. They should not need ActiveX or Adobe software. A Google search came up with this: [SECURITY] One or more activex controls could not be displayed because either . It appears to be a maleware problem.

That link ^ did it.

Here is the solution given to me by Microsoft, it worked perfectly.

You should delete 1 extra (parasite) zone from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\
with pseudo-graphic number, you'll see it before zone number 0.
It seems this is a bug of Adobe flash player update, though I am not sure.

The pseudo-graphic number they speak of before zone number 0 looks like a miniature upper case "L".

Delete that registry entry and all is well.
