Can't send XML files in Windows Live Mail

When I try to attach an XML file to an email message, WLM freezes. Attachments and mailing work fine with other file types. Anyone know what's going on here? Thanks.

Hi Arthur,

I normally use Outlook 2010 for my emails, however I also have WLM installed so I decided to fire that up and send a test XML file to myself. No problems. It sent and was received without any problems. Could it possibly be a corrupt file? Perhaps your email account profile is corrupt. Try creating a new one to see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried creating a new account and resending, but that didn't work. It behaved just like my main account--freezes when I hit the send button. Is there a way to confirm or check my email account profile? Even if the xml file is corrupt, it should still send it as is, right? Try a repair installation of WLM.

Concerning a repair installation of WLM, how do I do that? Are you suggesting that I remove WLM and then reinstall it fresh?

Since other file types can be sent ok, it sounds like something is trying to protect you from xml files or their contents. Maybe anti-virus? Or an options setting in WLM? When you say "Sending the file works when I send it from other accounts--just not WLM" do you mean you have another email program installed on Windows 7 and you mean "other programs" or "other accounts within WLM"? If it's an account setup problem then all file types should have the same problem sending mail with or without attachments. To check your account setup, all you can do is go to your emal service providers website for instructions on setting up the server (and maybe the advanced) tab in account properties.

I'll check the options and try a test send with my AVG off (just for a moment). I can attach an xml file and send it successfully from my gmail and yahoo mail accounts.

I checked options settings. They seem OK. AVG settings seem OK, too. I can attach and send xml files OK in Outlook on the same computer. Just not in WLM. Is there a setting I missed? Thanks.

Try the attached .xml file after removing the .txt extension. It came from Quicktime. I was able to send in with WM and WLM but I get the usual browser warning at the top when ever I want to view certain .xml files. (The .txt extension was added just so the forum would let it be uploaded.)

I saved the file and removed the .txt extension. Worked perfectly sent as an .xml file. Hmmmm. The only thing I can think of is that somehow WLM won't send my .xml files because they might be corrupt. But then, what does WLM care about the file content? It should send the files anyway, it seems to me. Could there be a security setting that's preventing my sending them? Thanks, roncerr, for sticking with me on this.

Why don't you upload your XML so we can try it? My WLM Safety "options" tab is set to low and the "security" tab is set to Internet Zone.

My settings in WLM are the same as yours. I tried to upload two files, but the forum attachment manager is returning an "invalid file" message for both files!

Do it as I did. Rename with .txt at the end so the fourm will accept it.

I took off the .txt extension and emailed it as an attachment in both Windows Mail on Vista and Windows Live Mail on Windows 7. I did notice that the file is very large at half a meg so it took a while to send. How long did you wait before you thought WLM was freezing? But since you can email it through your browser and with Outlook, perhaps a "repair" is is worth trying via Programs and Features. BTW, have you tried emailing the file with the .txt extension just to see what happens.

I waited long enough--Even with the largest files, "(1)" appears just to the right of the Outbox, and even with waiting more than long enough, that never happened.

I tried emailing the file wit the .txt extension, but WLM wasn't fooled by that. Didn't work.

I uninstalled WLM and reinstalled it, but that didn't help. Where is "Programs and Features"? I don't have that.

"Programs and Features" is the control panel item that replaced "Add/Remove Programs" in XP and earlier. How did you uninstall it without using "Programs and Features"? I think email gets stuck in the outbox when rejected by the ISP. Have you tried sending a completely different file between .5 and 1.0 MB? (Delete the out box email before trying again, otherwise the mail program will keep trying to send it.)

I was able to attach a compressed xml file (.mxl) to a message and send it successfully. I don't think the email with the xml file attached ever makes it to the outbox. Even with large attachments, when I press "Send," the "(1)" appears immediately to the right of the outbox, even though the message takes up to a minute or so to be sent, depending on the actual size of the attachment. With xml attachments, that "(1)" never appears next to the outbox. Other large file attachment work file. Only the xml files do not.
