Hi I know this has been an on going problem as it is mentioned repeately on various forums. I have tried most of the suggestions put forward but to no avail. I have tried to open media player from the C: drive but it just shows the files but at least I know its there. I have tried switching it off in windows functions: remove tick/ yes/ restart pc. Reset/ etc. several times but no good. also tried re-setting defaults, no good.
Tried setting in Set programme access and computer defaults/custom, but it wont let me. Shows

*The circle before "Use my current media player" is ticked The area after is blank. No box to tick
The circle before "Windows media centre" is NOT ticked The area: Enable access to this
programme is ticked

The circle before "Windows media player" is NOT ticked The area: Enable access to this programme
is ticked.

If I click on the circle before WM Centre it ticks the enable access box for WMP??
If I click on the circle before WMP it ticks the enable box for WM Centre??

However regardless of how I tick it as soon as I click ok it reverts back *
Win 7 home premium was preinstalled at purchase. I don't think media player has ever worked so I did a reinstall using Recovery D: but same results. Windows media centre appears in the start menu but there is absolutely no response to a click on it.
WMP appears to work fine, apart from the fact that the recovery corrupted all my music files and when I try to play any of them I get various error codes. ie. WMP is not installed correctly. WMP cannot play the file although most of the file extensions are wma. However that's a different issue. Please can you help me to get media centre to work. Thanks

Hi. Thanks you both for trying to help. Tried both your suggestions but no luck. downloaded fix wmp and win fix. these required a start up repair but no errors or damaged files found.

I right clicked the "blank page" icon in the start up menu "media centre" as opposed to Window media centre or possibly Microsoft media centre and scrolled to properties/location. given as: C:programdata/microsoft/windows/startmenu/programes to try to find a location that I could open it from, but again no luck.

(Im beginning to wonder if this media centre is in fact THE windows media centre and not a virus) Anyway I looked in programes (86) windows and every other file I thought it could be and although I found WMP ok I could not find any programes files relating to media centre. However there were definitely files there prior to running the fixes.

I also wondered if permissions could be a factor in this issue.

There is no icon to open WMP as in XP, however it opens automatically when a music file is clicked.

Boohbah, thanks I did try winamp but it was also unable to open the music files. All 400 or so dam!!!!!!!!! but I have heard that Linux has had success in sorting out corrupted music files so may try that. I run puppy Linux anyway.

many thanks to you both for your time and efforts.

You won't find it in the Program files. They have hidden it in the Windows folder. The path is %windir%\ehome\ehshell.exe
