Greetings. I am new here.

I am running Windows Ultimate 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1. I primarily use my home computer for writing and research. I am an audiophile; I spent many months trying various GUI-based audio engines (alone or with video capability), searching for one to play music satisfactorily while I work. I finally settled on Helium by Imploded Software (now in Version 14).

I originally downloaded the Free Version (Helium 13) last year, but did not work with it much; the installation produced an error message:

Setup
You need to install Windows Update KB4074096. Please check
Windows Update for more information or download and install and install the
KB manually.

Significantly, the program did not enter the registry as a Default Program.

Last month I was about to uninstall it, but decided to give it a serious trial first. I was amazed by the fidelity, and quickly decided to make it my default. I bought the license for the Premium Version (currently Helium 14.6.16364.0), uninstalled V. 13, and installed V. 14. I hoped that would circumvent the prior problem.

It produced the same error message, and once again failed to register; although it shows up in the Start Menu, it does not show up with Default Programs. I am therefore unable to make this program as my default audio file player because it is not listed with Control Panel Default Programs.

I have spent several weeks trying to figure out how to fix this. I tried various third-party programs to add a program to the default program registry, without success. I am not a programmer, and am reluctant to edit the registry myself (once burned, twice learned!).

I have learned that Microsoft produced a problematic update (KB4055532) in January of 2018. If I understand it aright, MS patched it, re-released it, but also released another fix (KB4074880), and finally a further fix (KB4074096).

My system downloaded both versions of KB4055532 at that time (January 2018); I could not find KB4074880 or KB4074096 (the one cited in the above error message) in my install history.

I have found no source for installing KB4074880, but Microsoft Update Catalog had the following download available for KB4074096:

fixittool-kb4074096_eb1134097ca5e981dfb99938f57e5f959d8e88ce.exe

I downloaded this, double-clicked it, and installed it. I uninstalled Helium 14, rebooted, and reinstalled Helium 14: same error message. (KB4074096 still does not show up in my install history.)

I found one online reference to the following executable file:

ndp47-kb4074880-x64.exe

I do not know if it is available or if it is safe to use. I have also read references to the following related items:

d3dcompiler_47.dll
KB4019990
Language Packs

Finally, I found an article saying that all issued updates are available as a single file: Windows 7 SP1 Convenience Rollup.

My questions are:

One: Is there a relatively safe and reliable way that a novice can use to add a program to the Default Program registry?

Two: Is there some way to use the above update information to fix the system so that Helium 14 will properly register upon installation?

Three: Would installing the Convenience Rollup package cause a problem, since I have most of those updates already installed?

Thank you for your attention. If you choose to respond, please use common language as much as possible.
