Can't start Peer Name Resolution Protocol

Being somewhat bored I began playing around with Homegroups. I delved into HG awhile back but never really got into it.

To make a long story short I can't start the service 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol' which is required for HG.

There are 3 Peer type services. One is started (Peer Networking Identity Manager). The other one (Peer Networking Grouping) is not because it depends on 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol.'

Both Homegroup services are started and I have IPV6 enabled on my NIC and in the LAN properties. Also the last time I played around with HG it seemed I needed the MS Firewall service started which it is.

The event log has this:

'The Peer Name Resolution Protocol cloud did not start because the creation of the default identity failed with error code: 0x80630801.'

Using the Event ID web search it leads me to this:

Event ID 102 — PNRP Protocol

I tried what they outlined (it's for Vista) but to no avail. I have no idea what the connection is between RSA and P2P.

I do notice I have a lot of entries in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys"

So....... any ideas? Luckily this isn't a showstopper for me but like most of you here you want things to work the way they're supposed to.

Researched the problem and found the solution. A file was corrupted and deleting it got the PNRP service running. The file was recreated correctly when the PNRP service started up. Here's the file for future reference:

"C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking\idstore.sst"

I have the same problem after restoring an image of my system drive. It happened the 2nd time in 2 days. After restoring a system image, my homegroup is not working anymore. It doesn't work because some services failed to start (PNRP service, Peer Networking Grouping). When I try to start PNRP i get the following error in Event Log:

I tried to delete C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking\idstore.sst but it didn't help. I have an older image of my system drive which is working well, but everytime I create a newer one after restoring it my Homegroup stops working again. Any ideas?

Great solution. Likewise, this solved my problem after wasting 2 hours of searching google.

After deleting, idstore.sst, i tried to leave my homegroup but it still didn't work. Then i clicked troubleshoot homegroup and it displayed, problem found and fixed by "Homegroup needs to be refreshed." It refreshed and after that, tada! I was able to leave my homegroup.

I'm still not working after hours and hours. Argh...

These services won't start:

Running Troubleshoot Home group didn't refresh.

I can't Leave the HomeGroup because windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup.

I can't see any Windows XP Computers on Windows 7 computer because of this.

Is there any source that has all the required steps and services needed to set up windows xp networking with windows 7?

I thought Windows XP can't be used in a HomeGroup? HomeGroup is Win7 only...

I can't see the appdata folder either. I am in the windows/serviceprofiles/localservice folder, but I don't see it.

I just got my wife a laptop for Christmas, and am very frustrated that my desktop which is in charge of homegroup can't log off of homegroup or change the password. I don't even remember setting up homegroup. Peer Network Grouping service can't be started.

Found the folder by using the start menu search to find how to show hidden folders. Got it working by deleting the file, leaving the homegroup then restarting a new homegroup. Thanks.

I have the same problem. "idstore.sst" was deleted from the PeerNetworking folder, but was not recreated upon restarting. Same error code when attempting to start PNRP. Would it be possible for someone with a functioning idstore file to upload it for download? I don't know how else to recreate the file, or if that will even fix the problem.

Did it for me to, , after hours I was feeling defeated... now I have to try and remember which services I changed from manual to automatic, LOL
