Hey guys,

My brothers laptop has apparently deleted his user account and so he cannot start it up? Im not sure about the details tbh, hes running Windows 7 on a Dell laptop and he still has the installation disc and stuff. All hes told me is that his account has been deleted and so he cant start it in normal or safe mode.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

When logging on try typing in "Administrator" with no password and see if he can log in that way, if yes you can then make a new account.

How would I go about doing this? Sorry I havent used Windows in 6 months so I cant remember too much. As far as I was aware you just get the user icons and you cant type a username in?

What is the EXACT error message he is getting? Most likely the account is still there and one or more registry entries has been messed up that point to it. The EXACT error message would help identify the problem.

System Restore as theog suggested should fix this.

If it was me I wouldve made note of the error message received and Google'd but some people arent so computer savvy :p
He just told me it was something to do with system32 but he couldnt get the error message to come up again

Ill try a system restore, thanks. Would the start-up repair thing work in this case?

OK then, ive had a look at the computer myself.
When I try to boot it says that the Desktop cannot be found and wont log in.
In safe mode it says the Desktop cannot be found but the computer can still be used, theres just nothing on the desktop.
There are no system restore points and the start-up repair tool says there are no problems either.

Im not sure what else there is to do or try?

Can you use Safe Mode to look in the C:\Users folder, and see if the missing account is still listed there?

If you can't access the missing User Files in Safe mode as suggested, and there are no Restore points or Startup issues to repair (try running Startup Repair repeatedly no matter what it says), then I'd wipe the HD to clean reinstall.

I'd try one last time with the WIn7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD to copy out files using this method: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

The user profile folder is listed in C:\Users
Stuff appears on the desktop now too in Safe Mode, but I cant log in using the username of Administrator and no password. In safe mode I cannot enable the Administrator account or even create another user account.
Im getting an error saying something about the profile service service is disabled or something like that.
