Can't System Restore, Boot or startup repair after removing viruses

I used AVG Rescue CD to remove some pesky viruses off of a friends lenovo Win 7 32bit (upgraded from vista) machine.

I stupidly chose to erase the infected files and something must have been a critical startup file for win7. It wont boot goes into startup repair and then, after a long time says it cant fix the problem. I tried system restore which after a while said it failed as well.

At one point I had a error message (after a failed startup repair) that C:\windows\system32\drivers\rdyboost.sys is corrupt.

I got the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade disk from my friend and booted from the DVD drive and ran startup repair....it says it cant find anything wrong!!! Still wont complete sys restore (tried several points) when booted from DVD or safe mode.

when i boot from the HD same startup repair failure each time.

I didnt back up any files and dont have a external drive to back up to. I guess I will have to go buy one...back up the HD after booting from AVG rescue cd, then do a clean install. (is that possible from a vista upgrade using upgrade disk?)

or does anybody have a suggestion? I might try a upgrade repair install?? from the DVD?

Rdyboot.sys isnt a critical file so it isnt what is preventing the system from booting. You may in fact still have a virus. You can do a clean install from upgrade disk (just goggle it)

The only was you are going to be sure you are rid of the virus is clean install. If you even import data back you could be bring the v irus back as well

Boot an Ubuntu live cd, copy files to external HDD, clean install 7, scan external HDD.

Thanks for the quick reply....so maybe do another scan with the AVG Rescue CD...(it still works fine Live Linux with networking) and then try again?

It found like 23 infected files last time with several trojans/backdoor programs.

Can I do a repair/clean install without losing the user data/data thats on there?

Try copying the files via a Live CD, then either scan or clean install. Your choice.

The live cd is to backup your files . . . or what is left of them. That system looks crippled, I'd also scan with an Avira boot cd.

I think i might try a second scan with the avg rescue disk first...see if it finds more errors...maybe I will get lucky...or does the current symptoms suggest that it just wont ever boot right again until a clean install??

Is it possible to do a repair install on win7 from the DVD without losing data/erasing the HDD?

Hey thanks for your advice BTW...I guess a backup clean install is the best way then...I'll DL the avira cd now...The AVG disk has a file explorer on it too...(its a live linux cd as well) Should i still get the ubuntu live cd to back up with?

Possibly, depends on what was infected, but a clean install would be a good idea.

I am downloading the avira. bitdefender and kaspersky also have rescue cd's any reason why one is better than other...I can't back up the data til tomorrow...still am not clear on if I can try a repair install as opposed to clean install that wont lose the data.

basically I will scan scan and scan some more tonight and would like to try the "repair install" (upgrade install?) that wont erase data....will that hurt anything that will lose data tonight?

1) Get an Ubuntu live cd

2) Boot with it in the drive

3) Copy all data onto external drive - doc's etc

4) Clean install 7
