Solved Can't use keyboard to arrow among login profiles.

In Win XP you could use the down, then up arrow keys to select a user profile then press Enter, so you could login without a mouse. Win 7 Home Premium seems to have abolished that feature. Some blind people won't be able to have more than one user on their machine because the arrow keys won't work on the login screens.

BTW, my Win XP machine has a hard time supporting my mouse on bootup and I have to use a keyboard only to boot into a user. USB circuits getting very weak.

Hello CMF now I am assuming that maybe you are visually impaired? which must be very frustrating trying to find the right login. If so then I can only suggest that the different login spots are made in very different colours to find the one you want.

The issue with the mouse have you tried another one or even updated the driver for the ports and the mouse? as being what looks to be a fairly new machine should not be that hard.

I can use the keyboard to select the User for bootup and switch user.
I tested this on a Desktop with Win 7 Ultimate 32 Bit using a wired USB keyboard (connected to a USB KVM).
I used the left/right (not up/down) keyboard arrow keys.

Do you have a USB keyboard you can try?

You may also want to check your settings in BIOS for USB devices.
Also check your settings for the Laptop software - maybe you have an OEM program for the Laptop keyboard you need to adjust.

You can also run a System File Check to scan for errors.

I am using an external USB keyboard for my laptop; haven't tried it with the laptop keyboard. I'm not sure if my version of Win 7 HP is OEM or not since it was reinstalled from an .iso from the internet then added to by the recovery jump drive when that wouldn't even boot on the initial recovery attempt. The recovery partition is gone too.

My laptop is stuck away in a corner so stuff can be hooked up to it like the printer, scanner, and external drives. I'm treating it more like the desktop it's supplementing.

I tried left / right arrows and that didn't work either.
My computer BIOS is set to discover USB 3.0 devices & ports when Windows loads, so everytime I bootup/login I get a balloon or two that says "This device will run faster on USB 3.0", but it doesn't tell me which device it's referring to. I assume it eventually defaults to USB 3.0 when I use the USB 3.0 devices.

The keyboard is plugged into a powered USB 2.0 hub, which is plugged into another USB 2.0 powered hub, which is plugged into a USB 2.0 port. I'd say because I can type the password for a user seconds after a mouseclick on a user, that the keyboard does work before I log in to my user.

Can you remove the USB hubs for the keyboard and try it that way?
Maybe they are causing an issue, and the simpler things are for testing and troubleshooting, the better.

I'm not sure what that means...
Are you sure you have a valid / legitimate / clean Win 7 ISO?

Tomorrow I'll boot up without USB stuff plugged in and see if that makes a difference.

I don't think the Win 7 HP 64 bit .iso DVD was valid because it had a ubiquitous license key attached to it and may have been shut down for activation purposes. But it was enough of a relaunch so my Recovery USB drive could function and install all the Hewlett Packard crapware so disdained around here. Computer has been working for more than 30 days, which is more than I can say about the VPC Win XP I set up and couldn't get activated because I have Win 7 Home Premium instead of Professional.

Hum CQF I am a bit confused re the first post in the thread I thought that there was some difficulty in accessing the login and not just a straight forward hardare issue.

I am sure David can help you from here on in if you don't have any luck with the disk you have or whatever I am sure if you make an ISO from the My Digital Life site and use your activation code then that would be the way I would go.

Windows 7 ISO x86 and x64 Official Direct Download Links (Ultimate, Professional and Home Premium) « My Digital Life < pick your version and load onto a stick (always handy to have) and activate when you install.

This will help too good luck!!

Have just seen your post and if you use the method I outlined there will be no HP bloatware.

Thanks AddRAM I knew I was lucky to have such good friends thats twice now and yep have saved that to favourites now.

Now the interesting thing is that I tried the Vista from that site some time back and it was hopeless but I guess it is pretty much a dinosaur now eh??

I booted up and saw the nearly invisible highlight of Users, was able to arrow through them, then pressed Enter , then was able to enter password. I'm gonna have to say the highlight was too invisible to notice. I'm gonna mark this thread as solved. Thanks forum posters.

Using keyboard only to login on a multi profile PC logon screen is completely possible and working. If not, it's a keyboard (hardware) error, not a Windows error.

If your account is the first one (top row left) on logon screen simply press Enter to select your account tile, type the password (if you have one) and hit Enter to confirm password and enter to desktop.

Some tips:
  • Welcome screen defaults to first account, the tile displayed on top left
  • Accounts are shown in alphabetical order according to the account name given when account was first created. Any later account name change does not change this order, i.e. if original accounts were Adam, Bert and Cain and you later change Bert's account name to Zorro, they are still shown in original order Adam, Zorro (originally Bert) and Cain
  • If you have 1 to 5 user accounts, tiles are presented in one row. Six to 10 accounts are presented in two rows, 6 accounts 3+3 (top + bottom rows), 7 = 4+3, 8 = 4+4, 9 = 5+4 and 10 = 5+5
  • Starting from default account, you can select other account tiles by using Arrow keys. Right / Left Arrow keys do not skip row when pressed at the end of the row, instead you need to use Up / Down Arrows to change the row
Examples:
  • On a 4 account PC, to "blindly" login to third account press two times Right Arrow followed by Enter, type the password and hit Enter
  • On a 7 account PC, to "blindly" login to 6th account (bottom row second from left) press Down Arrow + Right Arrow + Enter, type the password and hit Enter
