Can't view any DRM protected content

Hello everyone,

Hopefully someone will have some kind of an answer for me, I've been beating my head against this DRM problem for a couple of weeks now, and it's getting kind of maddening, LOL.

So here's what happened... I had vista 64, and subscribed to this drm protected video series. At first, I had a problem with drm, and got it fixed. Cool. Then I upgraded to 7, and had another problem with drm, but managed to get it fixed again. Still cool. But now, the problem is back, and I can't seem to fix it this time... Not cool!

I think this is related to some sort of permissions problem... One of the times I fixed drm, I read that if you had admin privileges, that that could interfere with drm working correctly, so I gave up my admin rights, and voila! it started working.

Recently, right about the time drm stopped working, I'd started to notice some flaky permissions issues, programs that couldn't write to temp files, or installs that would fail, stuff like that, where you just have to select "run as administrator". I checked my permissions again, and saw that I was in ??debuggers?? group instead of users. Strange... after fixing that, now when there's a UAC prompt, I have to type in the admin user credentials, which was new.

One final thing about permissions... I thought maybe the problem was a file-level permissions issue with my user profile, so I tried to add a new local user... when I try to login to that new user, though, the computer just sits forever trying to create the desktop, and never actually gives a complete login. Insufficient privs? Not sure.

Anybody got any ideas? This is driving me nuts.

Yes, tried that; I click on the button, and get a popup that asks me if I want to upgrade or cancel, so I click upgrade, and then it says "The component could not be upgraded".

Have you tried turning off UAC? Or tried to right click and run the app as administrator?

Hmmm, no, have not tried turning off UAC, although I did try launching IE as administrator, once, and it did complete the process without errors, but did not resolve the problem. I tried doing it again, and this time it failed. I noticed that when you run IE as admin, it uses a different profile, I guess, as my homepage wasn't set, fav's weren't there, etc. So, maybe that time when it worked, it was working for the administrator user? I guess I need to try to login as administrator, but local admin or domain admin?

So, yeah, my network needs description now... this is my home network, where I have my home office, and i have a server 2003 domain controller server, and all my workstations are joined to the servers' domain. The server almost never sees changes, except for windows updates. My workstation is a Dell XPS Studio, core i7 cpu, 6gb ram, win 7 64 bit.

I've a feeling that I could resurrect my old xp computer, but those videos are already drm'd to this computer, so I think I'd have a problem on the other one, no?

Just for kicks have you tried running the 32 bit IE? I have seen different issues with the 64 bit browser.

Hmmmm? I thought I read that there's no Flash for 64bit browsers, so you'd have to go out of your way to get a 64 bit browser, and then once you had it, any flash stuff wouldn't work. So, I've never sought out the 64 bit versions.

Have I read that wrong? There's not like a special 32 bit download of IE to download separately, is there? Hmmm, no, Google helped me to determine that I am running the 32 bit version:

Okay, I just got redirected to this "security component upgrade" page by the hoster of the drm content, and it says that it completes successfully:

Certificate Revocation List Update

And yet, when I then try again to play the content, I get the popup that says "the file or device that you are trying to use requires a component of windows media player to be upgraded. Click Upgrade to download and install teh required component".

I click "upgrade", and, once again, I've got "the component could not be upgraded".

Sounds like you are on the right track. Is there a way to download the upgrade? I had an issue on 64 bit 7 where an install kept failing due to a vague message, once I downloaded it locally and ran it it ran fine.

Edit: I should have specified on teh browser, that with 64 bit 7 it installs 64 and 32 bits by default but will use 64 bit IE by default. If you go to "all programs" you should see both versions with (64 bit) on hte 64 bit version. It should open flash in the 32 bit version by itself.

I did just find that I got bitten by an old problem, whereby a failed install of WSUS on my server sometimes causes my workstations to not get Windows Updates... apparently, my last update was on the 1st of the month... one of the updates that I see I'll be getting is for "RMS" or rights management service, and it says something about taking care of some drm issues. Maybe that's all I need? And maybe, on the first of the month, is when it stopped working!?!?! Once the updates are done, I'll look again at the history and get more information about that update.

Actually, I checked, and mine seems to be using the 32 bit by default... Maybe that's because I upgraded from Vista?

Just in case... Is this a legit genuine copy of Win 7???

Yes, all legit and.... TADA! I got it! Finally got this biatch working!!! One of the fixes I'd used before was to rename the drm folder to drmold, but i wasn't able to do that under 7, because the folder was in use... So, I rebooted to safe mode, and THEN I was able to rename that folder, and then once I came back in, I got the rather well documented problems/fixes related to when the upgrade button is greyed out.
