Carpet Adhesive/Tape

I started looking online for an adhesive to restick a piece of carpet on the back of the rear seats in my blazer, that serves as floor panels when the seats are folded down. During the search, I also found some carpet tape available, which would be simpler to apply, but I'm unsure just how securely that it will stick the carpet, especially since the surface that the carpet will stick to still has a layer of the old adhesive on it. While it would be good to be able to remove it when it becomes worn, I do not want it falling off prematurely. Anyone have any experience with this?

Yep, sure have, and the news isn't great. Pretty much anything you use won't be perfect, and will just be temporary. You can go with any of the tapes, and you'll just have to change them periodically. (Just make sure you don't get anything that will cause damage to the surface beneath.)

I'm imagining that you are speaking of adhesives, when mentioning damage, because I can't imagine tape damaging anything. I don't suppose that you have any idea of what the adhesive is that the manufacturer originally used...do you?

EDIT: How would one know if a method might cause any damage, since I don't expect that would be addressed in the product description.

I don't know what they use on your side the pond but I know I have in my under sink cupboard a can of carpet adhesive, well that's one of it's uses, it's called Ambersil Spray Adhesive NC 500. It does say that it's not suitable for plasticised PVC and it can effect some plastics. There is also double sided tape that can be used on things like that.

My guess would be Contact Cement, I know my friend who does auto upholstery uses it with great results.

I'm becoming quite disenchanted with 3M products. I tried using this tape earlier today:

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

And while it seemed to adhere to the plastic surface, still coated with the old dry adhesive, it wouldn't adhere properly to the carpet, after ~ 30 minutes, it simply let go. This coupled with a similar experience recently with 3M Double-Lock tape, which they claim is 4 times stronger than Velcro, would not hold to glass or plastic well enough to simply hold a remote to the bottom of a glass shelf.

I'm considering getting something on the order of Superglue, or anything that will hold the carpet PERMANENTLY.
