I am trying to carry out an in-place upgrade install to sort the issues out I am experiencing in Windows. Unfortunately, the install, when it carries out the compatibility report, tells me I cannot upgrade because I have a newer version installed?

Can someone help please?

Many thanks

Sounds like you may be trying to install original windows 7 media on to a system that has already been updated with SP1 (service pack 1)
You can either uninstall SP1 and try again or by far the easiest would be to update your install media with latest version
Have a look at this link and follow steps 1 & 2 to get yourself a new .iso with SP1 already included

As I am registered blind, the steps you have given me Pauly may be out of my comfort zone :( I am wondering if just purchasing another Win7 Pro x64 would be a better alternative? What do you think?

If I take the uninstalling SP1 route, how do I go about that please?

Many thanks for your time.

There is no reason to buy another copy of Win7 as the one you have on there can be reinstalled as often as you please.

Pauly provided you with a link to a tutorial which shows how to get a perfect reinstall, but since you only want to do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R then you only need to download and burn to DVD or write to flash stick the licensed version you have on there now from Steps 1 and 2.

If this is the WIn7 Pro 64 bit in your profile then you'd want to download this now: X17-59186.iso

Then you'd install Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool to write the .iso file to flash stick or burn to DVD. You want the bootable installer in case you need to run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html?ltr=S later.

Now you'd run the Setup file from the disk or flash stick to do the Repair Install. If you have any further problems let us know. Perhaps you'd also like to describe the problems you're having which led you to want to Repair Install as there may be other fixes indicated.

Sincere apologies for the tardy reply Paul and Greg, I've been upgrading/reinstalling Windows per your suggestions.

All of the issues bar one have been sorted :) I couldn't install updates for some reason but that has sorted itself by the reinstall. The only other issue I still have is the 'Could not load IDS_WINDOWS_TITLE error when I open a graphic.

Thanks again guys
Graham

What type of Graphics are these that you are opening?

Is your Display adapter fully up to date? Are all Important and Optional Windows Updates installed - check now?

Are you using only the tools and methods from Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
and did you wipe or delete all partitions during the reinstall as suggested?

Did you notice when the error began, after which set of Updates or Program installation? This is why it says in the tutorial to take time installing programs so you can monitor performance between each.

If you think you know when the error began, System Restore to before that point to see if it persists. If not give more time between each subsequent Program install to see which is causing the issue. If so, keep working backward in System Restore.

The graphics and photos I try and open are mixed i.e photos are JPEG.

Display adaptor is up-to-date as our Windows updates (now)

I have had the error for about four/five months now but have been unsuccessful in finding a solution to it.

My registered copy of Win7 x64 is the full retail version, not a OEM version.

My System Restore was corrupt and not working, this was one of the reasons I used the in-place reinstall.

No, I did not delete the partition as you mention. With me being registered blind I don't catch all written on-line, can I do this now?

Many thanks

It would be best to wipe the HD first with Clean command from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk-clean-clean-all-diskpart-command.html so we know that stray or infected code isn't responsible.

Then the only issue could be hardware, perhaps a failing Display adapter which can be checked by trying another, or something during the install that goes awry. This is why it's extra important to do a Diagnostic install giving time between each groups of Updates and then each program install to test performance to pinpoint when the problem arises.

It is an obscure error that isn't found by Google. Maybe someone else knows what it's about. I'll ask in our lounge.

What anti-virus application do you guys recommend please?

I also use Mailwasher Pro but have noticed this is very slow or doesn't always pick-up my mail since carrying out the in-place reinstall?

Thanks again for any/all input

>>Mailwasher is an anti-spam application, not an anti-virus application.<<

:) I am aware of that and have used it for years, its just that it seems so slow now that I have reinstalled Windows. Maybe its the all the new Windows updates I have installed?

My mistake, I had a look and see I misread your post.

You could try and see if Mailwasher also has any updates pending? I've never used it so not sure why it would be slow. Are all the Windows updates installed?

This is getting weirder! Windows Update will allow me to update IE9 but not install Windows updates? I personally don't use IE, preferring Firefox, but I thought I would just try this. I paused my Kaspersky IS and stopped MalwareBytes but no joy I'm afraid.

Sometimes several reboots will clear the Windows Updates and allow you to install more. If not work through these collected solutions:
Reset Windows Update components
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Forums
Automatically deliver System Update Readiness Tool drivers via Windows Update (Step 3)
System Update Readiness Tool

Establish a Clean Boot and go over your install with Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Run SFC /SCANNOW Command

If Updates will still not run, consider a Repair Install.
However since this is a new install, I would again read over Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to make sure you stuck closely with the steps which assure a perfect install, and if not then wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command from the booted installer to do it over.

This time take time between each group of Updates and then later each Program install to check performance to see when/if the issue repeats, so you can pinpoint what caused it. This is actually suggested in the tutorial.

Thanks Greg, that seems to have sorted things and my broadband is back to normal, yipee :)

Yes it would be helpful to me and others if we knew exactly what steps solved your problem.
I have better luck getting Windows Updates if I.E. is set as my default browser.
I rarely use I.E. but Microsoft does like it used. At least in my opinion.
My main browser is Firefox for most everything else.

Just for info:
My two active security programs are
Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes Anti Malware Professional
I have no idea whether this combination is the best.
Following the proper internet use (do's and don't) and a router along with those two programs has worked well for me for a couple of years that I have had this setup.
