Case Fans

I am looking at getting a new case and have found a couple I like. One has alot of fans. There are two front, one side, one rear and two top fans, all 120 mm. This is the most I have seen on a case and am leaning toward it except it is a dull black color. I found another that is blue on the outside and has the same fans as above except no top fans. == I was just curious how many fans most of you have and if you have top fans. Thanks,

I use a large ATX case- Cooler Master ATCS 840:



I chose this because it is easy to work on due to the size and the fact that the mobo tray slides out.
As you can see from the vid it comes with 3 230mm fans and a 120mm fan.
In addition to this I have added 6 optional 120mm fans- three intakes on the HDD cage and one at the back drawing air off the GPU.

With regard to fans I am using Akasa Apache, Noctua and Sharkoon Silent Eagle fans. All these are virtually silent in operation and the Sharkoons in particular shift a lot of air.
It is worth buying good fans as they cost about the same as crap ones.

The number of fans you need depends on whether your case operates on negative or positive air pressure and also what you are putting in it.
If you are overclocking you may need extra fans depending on the design of your case.
You might also consider one of the self contained water cooling units such as the Corsair H50.
At a push I would say the Sharkoon fans are the best.

two fans here in my not-very-expensive-but-does-the-job-nicely-especially-as-it-sits-under-my-desk-and-noone-sees-it-anyway antec three hundred case

one 120mm rear fan and one 140mm top fan. psu is at the bottom, which i think is good for bottom-heavy stability. lots of spaces for extra fans, including the side cut-out, but i really don't see the need.

i don't like fan noise, so they are both set at low speed, but they still do a great venting job even during marathon gaming sessions on my 33% overclocked cpu.

so in conclusion, i think top fans are good! heat does rise after all.

I run an Antec P182 case and it came with exactly 3 x 120mm fans. One at the bottom with the PSU and the hard drive. 1 at the top and 1 in the top back. I have no problems at all, in fact I even overclock a bit (Q9550 from 2.8Ghz to 3.2Ghz) and I use the stock Intel heat/sink fan.

In my opinion, my case has plenty of airflow with these 3 fans a I have no reason at all for any more fans. I keep all 3 fans at the absolutely lowest fan setting possible as I hate noisy cases.

Fans are your friend. I recommend you buy some higher quality ones.

I have 3 230mm fans and one 140mm in my case. They are DEAD SILENT, and a ton of air.

I'm currently running only 10 fans down from eleven. I'm summing up all fans CPU, GPU, PSU and case. I'm running all Noctura's 120mm except a 200mm and 230mm and two 50mm fans that start up like squirrel wheel and then once they warm a little they quiet down.

thats a nice looking case look nice in my office not very good for usb only 2? so that's 2 expansion slots taken up with pci usb to give at least 12 more usb

yes but if you fried the cpu just because of noise i think you would be more than swearing

All stock fan positions are fitted with fans, two front mounted 120mm, two push/pull 120mm for H50 exhausting out the top 120mm position, second 200mm top mounted fan exhausting, one 120mm rear fan exhausting, two 50mm rear fans exhausting, 230mm side intake fan, PSU, GPU. I think if you have an opening in your case for a fan then place a quality fan there. My system is stable, quiet and cool. I removed a Antec spot cooler as it no longer is needed and will go into another build. All fans are operating wide open and don't have a sound meter to test but is very quiet to my audiophile ears.

I'm with linnemeyerhere. I have 2x200mm front intake (soon to be 4), bottom 140mm intake, side 200mm intake, top 200mm exhaust and 120mm Ultra Kaze 3000 rear exhaust. The only fan that really makes a noise is the Ultra but if I turn it down a little I can barely hear the fans at all.

It's not about needing that many fans to keep things cool, for me it's about getting the lowest temps I can get (I see liquid cooling on the horizon)

In all fairness though, while lower temps are desirable...at a certain point it's somewhat meaningless to get even lower. It's not like your hardware will be faster or last X number of years longer for every 5 degree Celcius drop in temperature. As long as you are within the thermal spec and are stable...what difference does it make if you idle at 37, 34, 31, or 28 degrees?

only two at the front, six more at the back - i've just had to get behind it and have a look - it needs a clean!

My though is any opening without a fan is an opening which dust will enter. All intakes are filtered and all the others are exhaust. I'm in a carpeted area and it seems to be helping but as I've said before: "Your mileage my vary"
