Catalyst 9.4 + HD4870 = no GPU scaling

Hi everyone, I just installed build 7100 of Windows 7 (first time trying the OS) and am having an annoying issue. I have a widescreen monitor but play a lot of old games, so I rely on GPU scaling to properly use 4:3 resolutions. This works fine in Vista but in my new Win7 installation the option isnt even available in CCC.

So, what the hell? This is pretty much a deal breaker for me. Back to Vista for now :(

At least you get the CCC to load.!
It will not open for me (no errors in event viewer etc). Even though it is installed and I can select it by right clicking on the desktop it simply fails to work. I'm using x64 7100.

I have read of another person who can't load CCC and I would imagine that there are still issues with the ATI drivers and W7 - you can fill out a bug report, if you can't get it resolved...

Downgrading to 9.3 did nothing. Maybe 9.2? :p

Okay well the option is there in 9.2 but you can't change it to anything besides "use centered timings." Soooo, guess we just have to wait for ATI to fix it.

Why wait? You can contact their support team and have the fix it in the next update.

Hmm, not unless they just did it this morning. I tried 9.3 last night with no luck.

I'm having exactly the same problem here.
I have a 16" display on my laptop, so whenever I have to run something at a lower resolution than a ___ x 720 it just shows black bars around the picture. I used to choose the full screen mode in ATI Catalyst, but on Windows 7 the setting keeps turning back to "centered" as soon as I click on "apply".

As for Mariojas info on 9.3... it doesn't seem to work for me, unless the version I'm downloading is not the updated one you say. Then again, I can't find it on ATI's website anymore

Can anyone confirm that 9.3 makes it work?

Right Click the icon > Choose the "Compatibility" tab > Check off "Run in Compatibility mode" > Choose what OS you downloaded the drivers for. If you don't know, choose XP. If that doesn't work, try Vista.

Thing is that these drivers are made for Windows 7 too. Plus, it's not like you can simply right click a driver and change compatibility settings.

Telling a Vista/7 driver to work in XP compatibility mode is just useless. Mainly because graphic drivers for Vista/7 have an absolutely different architecture from the XP ones.

Of course. You would choose the Vista drivers if you downloaded the Vista version. Same thing for XP.

Well, I guess the only solution possible right now is to wait until ATI fixes this problem... It would be good if they could fix it for the official public release of the RC of Windows 7, altough it seems unlikely now.

This is a serious deal for people using widescreens, even more for 16:9 screens.

Has anybody tried to actually manually change the ATI configuration from OUTSIDE the Catalyst Control Center?

That's not related to the new 7 build... you need to manually install (actually it's update) the dd in Device Manager.
Do that by pointing to the LH6A_INF folder in the driver package, and pick it manually if it's not done automatically. You need the driver that's not tagged with Microsoft Corporation.

That's an issue with the 9.4 install system... on some systems it forgets to install the dd or even to detect the actual hardware, so cc has no proper diver to talk to. That's why it won't show up, but 9.4 definitely works on 7100.

Heh, I was wondering why I suddenly got the CCC to work on my laptop. So it was that! I guess I was lucky :P
Still, no fix found for the screen stretching/full screen option :(

BTW, is the installation of 9.4 only not working well on Windows 7, or is it a main issure with computers or laptop cards?
I've tried ATI Mobility Modder, but ever since 9.2 it doesn't work right when patching drivers...

The reply that keithw got was from a forum mod, which means it's in development. Win 7 drivers are still beta, or to say it properly the parts that of the drivers apps and installer system that relate to Win 7 are in beta stage.

Don't know about the 9.4 and other systems... it might just be related to specific hardware.

The Mobility Modder is old and 9.x are different enough to break compatibility with it.

Yep, it does, but I have a bit of a hassle when I first hit the Desktop. In the first minute or so after getting up, the display will have a major flicker attack, then things will settle for around a minute, then another flicker attack, then no probs after that. All CCC settings are stock and Crossfire is disabled, running Cat 9.4's on a fresh install of 7100 X64 with twin ASUS EAH2900XT's.

BTW, the Seven Catalysts are just a re-hashed set of Vista drivers. You can be sure ATI are working on the issues now that RC1's out - especially with the RTM not too far away.
