Cause for Networked Computers to Simultaneously Fail to Boot?

My wife, a computer tech, called me because the organization she works for suffered a simultaneous failure of some (but not all) networked computers to boot, across several different physical locations (4 different cities). They think it might have been caused by a Windows update the previous night. OS is Win 7 and XP, both affected. So far, everyone is stumped, and computers have defied everything from system repair, rebuilding BCD, etc. Reinstalling Windows on all these computers is not an attractive option! Happy to provide additional info, but not sure what is needed.

Thanks.

Phil

I would do thorough malware scans before trying to fix them. If both XP and W7 aren't booting that seems unlikely from an update. More likely the machines had some vulnerability that was exploited.
