Cause of windows security updates 13/10/10

Avast is auto updated several times a day if and when needed.
So is MSE if needed.

Dont get me wrong, I do agree for a free solution MSE is likely one of the better ones and I mean no disrespect but I am curious about this.

Even though its possible, wouldn't running 2 real time scanners side by side be a performance hit on the PC?

Its nice they can work together but is really a good idea?
What I mean is:
It seems to me that the 2 side by side may cause a larger performance hit on the HD that a single AV.

And in some cases I think some of the paid suites offer more protection and addition features at a much lower system impact, than 2 running together?

What I mean is, lets say you launch a program.
MSE scans it 1st and then Avast scans it. Right?
Its safe so everything is fine.

Something like Norton for example may say
"Oh yea, I remember that. Its totaly safe. It was scanned at install & double checked on the cloud. It hasnt changed since so Im not going to do anything right now."


But back to my original question.
Would these 2 side by side not cause a a lot more HD activity than is really needed slowing things down from time to time? Or am I missing something.


I also agree that Malwarebytes is a excellent app on any system, regardless of your AV preference. Even if just for On-Demand scanning.

I don't notice any problem with performance using both.
I have the Avast Internet with the firewall etc.
Already had it before installing Win 7.
I would go with the Windows firewall if using the free Avast.

Here is my processes running and Res Mon.

If I had a barely passable to use Win 7 puter then using one AV might be more practical.
Most everything I have read you really need about 4GB of ram for Win 7 so put it to use.

I still run almost 1800 on Pass Mark running the memory on Auto in bios not XMP.
Runs up to about 1500MHz under load at 1.5v.
XMP is 1600MHz at 1.65v+ at idle voltage jumps over 2v under load.
Better performance slighly but more voltage stress on the CPU.

Up to the user I guess.

I will add that I have no proof two AV are better than one AV but my weekly Malwarebytes scans have never found anything. It works and that is all that matters to me.

I'm not certain, but I think I had something like your norton example happen to me back before I cleaned the bloatware from our machine.
After I closed the browser all heck broke loose with our desktop icons, and I had to do a reinstall from the recovery partition.

As far as slowing things down...I don't know about Avast, and I'm not sure about MSE, but I think MSE will halt processing when demand on the CPU reaches a set point.

We would have to start a new thread to document benchmarks, such as Hoppy's 1794.4 .
The way this conversation is going maybe we should.

The Free and Pay are the same AV. The paid gives you the firewall.
Updates are the same. I've been using Avast since 2006.
