CD Drive randomly Open

When ever i wake my PC up from Sleep for some reason my CD drive always opens :S

Lately it has been making a wired sound. It sound just like it does when i insert the CD and it laoding, however no CD is in the drive

Hello Mitch656, I think you aren't getting replies, because this is an odd one. My 1st inclination would be the door switch on the drive somehow. You know how you can nudge it when it is open and it will close? There is a switch that says the door is fully closed/the door is fully open, otherwise the loading motor would just run.

However, you also mention that the drive makes noise like it is seeking for a disc? The drive will also do this when the switch says "the drawer is fully closed, look for the CD". The obvious suspect is the drive itself. You can also try uninstalling the drive from device manager, and rebooting and let the PC find the drive anew. I'd think it unlikely it is a driver error, but that is worth trying as well, before you spring for a new drive (or put up with the irritation).

A place to start: I would do an off-line virus scan and malware scan. I have seen viruses that open the CD/DVD tray. Just a guess.

ive heard of prank viruses that do this. make sure u run scans with a couple programs

Mk. I havent done anything yet... but everytime i put my office 2010 CD in there it seems to spit it back out It open back out twice and then it stayed in the 3rd time. Do u think its the driver or the actual CD thing

I thought Macs were the only computers with this bug. Certain model G4's & G5's had the exact same behavior. Either when first booting or waking from sleep, the CD drive would open..

Couple of things....

You can try upgrading the firmware on the drive, it could be an actual bug.

Also, did you ever re-order or change the arrangement of drive letters?

Nope i never changed the order or arrangement with the drive letters and i dont know how to get the latest firmware

I have problems consistently with my DVD drives, I'm onto my 4th in almost as many years.

Sometimes changing to a different cable/socket gives it a bit more life, but inevitably they will refuse to open at all.

Just in the last week or two, it takes a couple tries to read COD5WAW disk, so looks like I'll be up for another one soon

Also, for months now when I open it, it will go fully open then instantly start closing again, makes hard to get the disk in >_> But, if that is similar to what you have as well, then no doubt just buy another one
