I have a Toshiba Satellite C655 with a DVD-RW drive. Every time I pop in a CD, my computer (or drive) doesn't detect it. It makes the normal whirring/spinning noises but nothing else happens. I went into the device manage and uninstalled and re installed the program and this did not correct it. There's also one specific CD with some pictures I have that I put in a different laptop, but it shows no files.

Seems like a failed drive, are the same disks readable in another PC?

@Maxia There are no error messages on Device Manager and I put in a DVD and nothing happened. Strangely, I put in a old music CD and an installation CD and the drive detected them.

I'm getting no error messages whatsoever.

@Britton30-I tried a couple of CDs in another computer, one worked, another didn't. I think there's a problem with that CD, which holds some pictures.

I tried out some CD-ROMs-The Sims and Sim City 3000 worked, Sim City 4 didn't.

Strange I had a same problem awhile back it would read some media but not all if i left a disc in the drive and rebooted some times it would work in the end replaced as they are not that expensive.
