When i start up my PC the CD Rom Drive shows in Device manager etc. but i only have to click somewhere or try to burn a disc and it disappears.
My new CPU is too advanced to allow me to do any further windows updates

I would say that you have a ODD failing drive. Try to boot the win 7 installation disk or use a boot able Linux USB drive and try to use the Linux CD/DVD burning software.
Many Thanks for the solution you gave. I applied the Patch and also the offline MS update SP2 I can now see my CD ROM Drive and am now able to use Windows Updates. I am now installing 50 or so updates.:thumbsup

If you leave WU on automatic it will install the blocker again.
My suggestion is to turn WU to manual under Services (%windir%\system32\services.msc) and on the WU page set to never check.
- For Windows install the offline security only updates (not the Quality Rollup)
- Run WU manually to see the available office updates.
