Cern scientists reporting at conferences in the UK and Geneva claim the discovery of a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson.
The particle has been the subject of a 45-year hunt to explain how matter attains its mass.
Both of the two Higgs-hunting experiments at the Large Hadron Collider have reached a level of certainty worthy of a "discovery".
More work will be needed to be certain that what they see is a Higgs, however.

Yep, it would seem. Lots of verification will be taking place, but this looks really good. Finally, we know what gives mass to everything..........

I read a while back that they discovered a subatomic particle that travels faster than the speed of light. This created a huge headache for the scientists as they would have to revise all of Einstein's equations that are based on the speed of light because there is an even greater speed that has been discovered.

I bet the men behind this think thier so clever yet they still can't explain how space goes on forever, and for that matter they still can't explain why I can't walk through brick walls.

However theyre "scientific" knoledge is far beyond mine which I guess I should give them credit for, what makes me angry however is scientists say things like the big bang and evolution yet we still don't even understand what dirt is made of, I know that sounds over the top but it's true. hmm

Good on them for trying anyway but shouldn't this money be going to greece and america or more importantly starving african children!

You can't walk through brick walls because you aren't strong enough.

Dirt is made of minerals, minerals are made up of combinations of elements, elements are a product of nucleo-sythesis in stars.

No, money shouldn't go to economies that spend more than they make - thats called a deficit, and when it gets very large, there are big problems for everyone.

Many people have donated to African countries where starvation is at epidemic proportions; sadly, however, much of that was squandered by the governments that took direct ownership of these monies. Aid agencies have got smarter about this sort of thing, thankfully, and ensure most of the money is invested directly in self-help schemes, better farming practices, clean water supply etc.

All space and time originates from a singularity, according to the Big Bang model of the Universe. So if galaxies are accelerating away from one another, then so is the space between them.

Ermmm.....I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but there aren't any walls in space, or even outer space, for that matter. The closest thing to a 'wall' is the termination shock, the boundary where the solar wind meets interstellar space. However, this shouldn't cause you any headaches as both Voyager probes succesfully passed through the termination shock with no ill effects.

We both can't understand mine.

Naturally our human minds want to belive what we understand.

However it does not mean what we understand is correct.

Whilst I agree with this, also being in physics myself I feel that this is going to be a great breakthrough.

The Higgs particle will answer many questions and will slot into many equations where the only missing part is the Higgs Boson particle. You may have some answers after all

I hope you don't think that all scientists think they're cleverer than everyone else, because not all of us do

lol where'd you get that pic? From the language on the banner, I'm from one of the two possible countries that use it. Well, 3, but I think those guys use English more. Also, mountains in the background rule them out.

Back on topic, nice article, definitely looking forward to the anticipated positive follow up. Also, to those whining about money, governments spend far more on useless and harmful toys of war.

At least it's productive and money spent on learning is never a waste. I'd rather them spend money on something like this than funding pointless wars etc

The rest of us just use common sense. I'm solid - it's more solid - ergo I can't walk through it
