Change desktop Windows 7 Starter without program or fiddling regedit
Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this reply and I normally don't post on forums, but since I have spend hours to figure this out I decided to post this and maybe it is useful to happy windows 7 starter users who are also frustrated that they have to look at the windows logo all the time on their desktop.

I myself am very happy with my eee 1015pem but was fed up withe the logo on my desktop. So I searched many hours on the web for the best way to change it. But all the solutions involve an extra programm running (I don't want that on my netbook) or fiddling with regedit.

I found this very simply way:
1- go to C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows
2- right click the file img0 > properties > details
3- click remove all personal data (undelined below in the box)
4- remove ALL data (if you dont have permission; fiddle security settings untill you do)
5- pick a desktop .jpg you like as desktop image and place it the same folder as img0.jpg
6- rename the original img0 to something else
7- rename your new image to img0
Done

let me know if this works (it did for me)

Ronald,
I would edit your post with screenshots of a step by step and click the little report icon and ask for it to be moved into tutorials. :)

Great work.

Change desktop Windows 7 Starter-NO extra programm-NO registry fiddle

Hi,

I spend some time to figure this out so it would be a waste not to share where I can. In the attachment:

A very simple way to change your desktop image for Windows 7 Starter.
- No extra programm needed.
- No risky fiddling with your registry (regedit).

Perfect also for netbook users who don't want any performance loss.

Cheers :geek:

Hi,

Yes, that should work fine.

I don't have starter - but isn't that the way everybody does it?

Thanks for posting it up , maybe it hasn't occurred to some people , so could be useful to them

@siw2; a big sat back in windows 7 starter is that the option to change your desktop wallpaper is disabled. most people need to use a program or need to change their registry settings directly with regedit which is quit a hussle. Especially for netbook users an extra program is something you don't want.

In all other editions of windows you just can change your desktop wallpaper the usual way. See also other threats & discussions on this issue. so unless I am terrible misstaking this solution might contribute to this problem.

it is still a pain to change every time you want to change it. i downloaded the program that changes it for you after i found the registry changes to be too cumbersome for someone who likes to change their wallpaper weekly. it really doesn't use too many resources.

Yes , it may be helpful to those with starter.

I have always set the desktop background choices in pe that way.

I assumed those using starter would also do it that way.

You're quite right - I have now looked around and people seem to be using registry files to do the job - not sure why - the obvious way is to change the image manually.

Perhaps some users don't want to change permissions on files - they would maybe rather have a program do it for them .

actually you are doing the same thing the regedit trick suggests, just in regedit you change the path of where windows looks for the wallpaper file. so download anything you want and paste that path into the wallpaper regedit entry instead of making windows look for img0 and changing the image rather than the file name. it's the same thing.

as a side note, as i already pointed out in your other thread, oceanis is the program you guys are referring to. it uses next to nothing on my 1015pem as far as memory goes. it is much more user friendly than your method or regedit as well. just fyi.

There is a program available, the installer is in French but the language on the program itself is in English, if anyone wants it I can post it here or provide a link or something.
It has all the background changing features, slideshows, ect. I used it until I upgraded my Starter Edition.

Yes if you want to change it every week maybe a programm works nice. Asus has also a nice utility for this.

I just wanted to change te wallpaper background in windows 7 starter & because this is in the normal way impossible to do and I do'nt want to use extra programs or manual change the registry I figured this out. By disabeling the locked default wallpaper background I am now free to place an use any wallpaper just the normal way.

The lock on the wallpaper in W7 starter is one of the ways Microsoft tries to let users upgrade their version.

as mentioned earlier. This option is locked by default in Starter. I know it sounds unbelievable, but it is reality.

And if you are not using W7 Starter, why the .... you change the property settings of the deafult picture. (not security but property settings!) In all other versions you just can change the wall paper!

maybe because you are not a W7 Starter user you don't see the problem. But just google the issue and you see any starter users struggle with this 'wall paper lock'

@ PwnFrnzy

thats the whole point. By disabling the lock of the default wall paper I don't ned a programm. You only need to do this exercise ONCE. After that you are as free as you are in other windows editions to change your wall paper.

May be it was better to change the title of this thread to "unlock the default wall paper in windows 7 Starter"

I am guessing you guys also think you need to do the steps every time you want to change your wall paper. You don't! These steps actually remove the default lock of the Windows wall paper for once and for all.

I think your post was very sensible.

It seems to me the easiest way to do it.

I am surprised people weren't doing it

Too easy to be true maybe... It certainly seemed simple... but it didn't work for me.

I followed the instructions precisely, even tried variations on them, but all I got was the same black screen. Eventually I had to revert to the old file and point regedit back towards it (I even had to dig the file with its old details out of the recycle bin).

I don't know if it was because I was fiddling around with some other files/permissions/registry before, trying to fix the background before I found this thread; or because Microsoft has changed something in SP1 - but if anyone has any ideas about what I could be doing wrong, please tell me!
