Change file extension upper/lower case

Everyday I upload some files to my website and to simplify my website operations, I use the same filename and just upload a file with new information every day. The case of file extensions is of no consequence to Windows 7, but it matters to my website. I want to standardize on one case and it doesn't matter which as long it's the same all the time. I have one app, the snipping tool, which seems to generally make files using uppercase, but I have some existing files that are lower case. I have tried to get rid of the lower case extensions by deleting the file and then recreating it with the same name. When I do, Windows changes the case from upper to lower. If I simply create a brand new file with no previous instances of that file in existence (as far as I know), then the default case is upper. How does one go about converting all existing files of a particular type to a standard file extension case, be it upper or lower.

Not sure you can as Windows is case insensative, but have you tried doing it from a Command prompt, enclosing the filename.ext in double quotes as "filename.ext"?

If that doesn't work, maybe a two step process would.

ren "FileName.EXT" FileName.EX"
ren "FileName.EX" FileName.ext"

Thanks for the suggestions, but they didn't work. I can take a file like "TestImage.jpg" and rename it to "TestImageX.JPG" and the upper case extension will persist, but if I try to rename it back to "TestImage.JPG" it reverts to the lower case extension in less than a second. I can even delete the file altogether, but if I create another file with the same root name it will recover the lower case extension even if the new file is created with an upper case extension.

Welcome Atom. I have tried to change the case of some files on my Desktop just now. I went from lower>upper>lower and the change was accepted. Types I tested are.txt, .jpg, and .ico.
I don't know if it will work, but try puttin the files to change on the desktop and try it. I could not get files in a folder to behave.

I can move the file to a different folder and change the extension case and it will stay until I move it back to its original folder at which point it reverts to its original case. Now that I understand what is going on, it's not that hard to work around. I just figured there must be a simple way to change the extension case. Guess not.

FWIW: I had some problems with renaming files and sysinternals from ms had a program called streams.exe
which after reading about it. you might look into this program.

Check out the dir command looking for alternate data streams.

dir /r will show you if the file has an alternate data stream which could be
messing up your renaming of a file.

Change Folder Name

I had the same problem. I would change file extensions to lowercase, and they would immediately revert. However, I noticed that if, after changing all of the extensions, you change the folder name (that they're in), then back to its original name, the extensions remain lowercase.

The problem seems to deal with display of filename itself, but not with actual file name. If you switch extension to lower case, then filename will be changed, but Explorer continues to display extension on upper case for some time.
