Solved Change Folder View Setting from Global to Individual Folder

When I'm in a folder and changes the folder view from, say, List to Extra Large Icons, the folder view changes for all the folders on my computer, which is a royal PITA. Is there any way to change the folder view only in the folder I'm in at the time and leave the setting for the other folders as is? Example: have picture folders set for Extra Large Icons and some document folders set for List and others, Details.

Hello Jeannie,

You are correct that changing a folder view in one folder should only change it in that specific folder, and not all of them unless you used "Apply to Folders" to do so.

You might see if resetting folder views back to default may be able to clear this up for you.

It doesn't? I had the problem you mention about one view for all folders, but after I installed ShellFolderFix I was then able to have Details for one folder, Large Icons for another, etc, and the program saved the preferences, in addition to size, and position.

All I can tell it did was to scramble and resize my desktop shortcuts. I had to reorganize and resize them back to where they were.

Nothing's clicking. I can't follow the tutorial because I'm not getting the screen selections shown in the tutorials.

It sounds like you may not have opened Folder Options from within that specific window, and opened it from another location instead.

Ok. I did a quick search on the program to see just want it was and all I saw was that it allowed Win 7 to remember window size and location (which I thought might be especially handy once I get some more monitors). I'll have to try it later after I make a fresh image of my boot drive (yes, I'm a coward). Right now, my brain is AWOL after a bad night. My TMJ flared up for some reason which is odd because, other than the problem with folders (and that is nowhere near enough to trigger a flare up), there is nothing stressing me right now.

Whoa! I think I may have found the problem. I've been accessing My Documents, My Pictures, etc. through the Library links in the Start Menu. On one of the wacky whims I occasionally get, I tried going into My Computer, clicking on the drive where My Documents and My Pictures are located, then clicking on them. Going in that way, the folder views are working correctly.

So...is the problem going through Libraries fixable, such as unscrewing a crewed up setting, (I find getting to My Documents, etc. through the Start Menu Library links to be the most convenient) or do I need to toss Plan A and come up with a Plan B (such as shortcuts on the Taskbar)?

Yeah, you'll need to do it from the actual folder (ex: "C:\User\(user-name)\Documents") and not from a library instead.

If you like, you could change the User folder buttons in the Start Menu to open to the actual user folders locations instead of the library location to help make it easier.

Ok, before I do that, I should point out that my User folder is still on my C drive but I have My Documents, et al., on my E drive (I dragged them there when I first set up the machine). Will that mess up anything if I follow your tutorial?

Also, the more I think of it, the better the idea of putting shortcuts on the task bar or notification area sounds. I can create a shortcut in the Start Menu itself but that doesn't really gain much (and it doesn't leap out at me there). I can also create a shortcut on the desktop but I would have to minimize any windows in the way to get to it. When I try to drag a folder shortcut to the taskbar, I wind up with a Windows Explorer shortcut that takes me to Libraries. Yeesh! is it even possible to put a folder shortcut on the taskbar?

No worries. The Start menu user buttons tutorial above uses the GUID references for your user folders, so it will open them no matter where you moved them to.

You could use any of the options in the tutorial below to pin a folder to the taskbar.
