When I stalled Windows 7, I was with the understanding I was the Administrator.
But then I find it will not let me into system directories to access files and etc.

Upon checking I find the Admin account is still deactivated, was up with that? :)

How can I change my account to the real admin and keep all my settings and etc?
Or
How can I use the real Admin account and transfer my settings?

That hidden administrator is not meant the be used the way that you intend. It is for solving problems, that cannot be solved in any other way. Use it on a daily basis you open yourself to all kinds of problems, including security.

You will get no more access with Hidden Administrator than with an Adminstrative-level account with UAC turned off.

Access System and hidden files by unhiding them in Control Panel>Folder Options>View.

It's best to enable and run as Hidden Administrator during a reinstall as you must set up a complete new desktop, files, settings, etc. I would not do this unless you know what you are doing (and you know who you are;))

I have worked on computers for years and I am very familiar with all the settings.
I have un-hidden all the system info and etc.

But the present admin permission will not let me access the files in my own user account! And when I do certain installs and etc it says you do not have admin
permission!

There has to be a better way, I have worked with computers for years also and I'm MCSE. But I do not understand this having 2 admin accounts in win 7?

I have the hidden administrator account activated now I would just like to transfer all my settings to this account?

I disagree with both of you, the present admin permissions are preventing me from doing simple tasks in the user folders and accessing the system folders like I have done for years.

Hello RLHoldenSr, welcome to Seven Forums!

You will find there are still junction points you cannot get access to, if these are what you are referring to as they do not actually exist.

Please keep in mind RlHoldenSR, that Windows 7 is not Windows XP and should not in any way be treated as such.
You will need to unlearn what you have learned.

Many of the things that people were allowed to do in XP had actually created many of it's vulnerabilities.

Note: Documents and Settings are no longer where profiles are kept.

Users is where profiles are kept.

Data can not be saved to root of C:, Windows or System32 , among others.
Without first turning off UAC (which is not advisable)

What folders paths and files exactly are you trying to access?

Thanks for the very helpful reply!

If you check my birthday 07/04/1952 you will see I have been around for some time and into computers from the very beginning, before www was even widely known.

I was using something known a a slip account and 300 baud dial up modems!

And I also paid $1,500.00 to have my first IBM XT built :geek:

So far I truly like what I see in Win 7 x64 :D

I was trying to access some folders under my User>RobinSr and it told me I did not have permission.

I also had some trouble accessing the >User>RobinSr>Download area?

You should be able to transfer your settings by copying the contents of the hidden User>Named>Appdata folders to the same folders in the User>Administrator account. You don't need the temporary folders' contents.

if you open explorer and click on Downloads folder on the Left.
Do you still get an error?

Something tells me you are not running as the account you think you are.

Any folder in your user directory that throws up "Access Denied" is a junction point for old applications.
You should leave these alone. See the links in my signature.

Welcome RLHolden, As some have alluded to on "junction points" are really pointers for older programs that require folder names that are really not in windows 7. If you notice under users there are sometimes two folders with the same name, one you can get into and one you can't. The one you can't is just a pointer for older programs.

I have two "My Documents" in my user folder, one is a shortcut and one looks like a real folder. The one that shows up as a shortcut will not allow access. regardless of what you do. As I said it is there for a pointer.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your informative reply

I did copy over the app settings like suggested but I still can not get all the quick menu shortcuts to show in the Admin account. I did get my monitor calibration settings and etc though. :D
