If this problem is not too long ago, and if you do remember a date when you did NOT have this probelm, do a system restore. Pick that date as your restore point.

no offence but there must be an easier / other way to choose icons for specific files, ie, pdf, exe and so on.

and i'm sure a system restore would work but i've done waaaaay too much other stuff for that to be worth it at the moment.

See if this method will work.....
Right click at the pdf file > Properties > Shortcut tab > click Change Icon.....

Or right click on any PDF file and select "open with". Make sure you have the small square ticked (Always open..etc..) select Adobe reader (or whatever PDF reader you use)from those offered, or browse for it. Click and "OK". Adobe will then be the default again.

this worked to get at least some icon back, thanks!

although it would be cool if we could specify which icon we wanted. seems to only work for actual FOLDERS from i've learned today.

thanks for all the suggestions.

Not sure what you are saying but. My procedure, fwiw, is to right click the item and select properties, and then "change icon". If I am not satisified with the shown default selection, then there are choices. You can browse through the (system32) dlls, or select the main source, which is C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll-
Another alternative is to download one of the free icon packages, such as
Free Icons Web - Icons, Free Icons, Stock Icons, Desktop Icon
to a folder, and browse there for something suitable.

Disregard. I have just been reminded that this only works for shortcuts!

Hello Liquidmonkey,

This may be able to allow you to change default icon used for a file extension. :)

Hope this helps,
