I have had my mobo die on me and have had to replace it, along with the CPU, mem chips etc. I would really like to be able to run my existing Win7 again with the new hardware. I have it on the original HD, but everything else is new.

Is there a preferred method of getting it to run and install new drivers to get it back up? Have seen a couple of methods, but would like to know which is the best way to go about it.

Thanks in advance.

What are the specs (MoBo, CPU, GPU) of the old and new computer?
What kind of win 7 license was on the old computer (OEM or retail)?

My hardware was;
Asus 990FX Sabretooth Mob0 (Now dead)
AM3+ CPU
16GB DDR3 Memory
Radeon RX 5500 XT Graphics Card
Running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OEM

My New Hardware;
ROG STRIX X570-F Mobo
AMD ryzen 5 3600 CPU
32 GB DDR4 RAM
Radeon RX 5500 XT Graphics Card (as before)

Windows is installed on a 500GB SATA Hard Drive, which I have moved across.
I understand that as OEM Windows, it’s not possible to activate it on new hardware (Unless I’m mistaken)
What I would like is to be able to get existing Windows up and running offline, salvage some files off it, such as my Windows Live Mail emails and some other stuff and maybe purchase another copy of Win7 to run in VirtualBox, with Win10 as my main OS.

Thanks in advance.

1.
If you are moving from am3+ to am4 you are probably best booting the paragon iso to adjust it for you.

Put the hd in the new machine. Do not attempt to boot into it.

Boot up the paragon iso on the new machine and do the adjust.

Then you should be ok to boot into the hd on the new machine.
Make Windows 7 bootable after motherboard swap

2.
it’s not possible to activate it on new hardware

Presumably you have the license key. You can ring ms on the freefone number ( type slui 4 in the run box to get the number ). Wait for an operator . In the unlikely event that they ask, tell them you had to change the mobo. If they ask how many computers it is being used on, the correct answer is one. They give you a lot of numbers to type in to activate.

Ther might a couple of slight snags

1. That paragon iso is old and might not boot on your x570

You could try something like O&O diskimage ( there is a giveaway of pro v14 wwhich has adjust to new hardware module.), which you would have to install and create boot media from it.

Maybe it will boot up without adjustment, but that would be a surprise.

v15 doesnt support creating boot media on win7.

There is a little cheat - replace recovery\{someguid}\win7 winre.wim with win10 winre.wim then it works

I have tried to use the Paragon disk tool. It does boot, but when the licence screen appears, I have no keyboard or mouse. Hence I can't click the 'Accept' button and I can't get past this screen for it to work. Tried various mice and keyboards to no avail.

My next option is the 00 diskimage v15, which I'm about to try...

You would need to add the 32 bit usb3 drivers to the paragon. If you dont know how, just use O&O

I'm going to use 0&0 and have managed to download the .exe file, although I have no registration info as yet. The manual is a bit confusing - how do I actually make a bootable CD/DVD to run 0&0 on it? I can't find any info anywhere, except that you can run it from disk/USB.

Just to clarify; I make an image of my existing Win7 disk, save it somewhere (External drive) then find another HD and clone it back to the new drive with the Machine Independent Restoration feature to strip out "old" hardware files, ready for the new drivers?

It is not necessary to make an image.

You could plug the old hd into the new machine.

Do not try and boot into the old hd yet.

Instead, boot the O&O bootable media via usb on the new machine and point it at the windows folder

Click Tools > Change Computer properties

O&Oadjust.jpg

- - - Updated - - -

NOTE: v15 does not support creating bootable media from win7 winre.wim.

You would need to trick it into using win10 winre.wim or point it at win10 installation media

Or get v14 instead, which does support win7 winre.wim

There is a giveaway of v14 for free:
Registration for your FREE license of O&O DiskImage 14

they will send an email , clcik the link and they send another email with your free license.

download pro v14 program here
Download Archive

OR you could try the paragon free rk14 linux based iso which is more recent than the paragon 2010 iso.
I cant guarantee the linux based iso will have the drivers to boot on your machine, but you can try.

NOTE: If you are using windows 7 recovery environmet, it does not natively support usb3. So you would need to add usb3 support to winre.wim first.

OR point O&O boot media creator at win10/win11 installation media

Thanks for all the help, I have managed to reset Windows 7 using the O&O software - even though it was in German!

I have had a few problems (hence the delay in writing this) as the new mobo failed on me and had to return it for a replacement.

Despite being able to run up Win7, there are no drivers for it and Windows gives a popup telling me of "unsupported hardware which is designed to run on later versions". Hence I can run Win7 severely crippled with no USB or PCI drivers- but working just enough to extract all my essential files I was after. Which means I'm going to be forced to ditch Win7 completely and will probably go with Linux in a virtual machine.

Thanks again. :)

I can sure that ASUS Gigabyte MSI X570/B550 can work on win7 and don't need mod acpi.sys, because I had tested them before. I recommend buy a mainboard without WiFi card, also can buy the mainboard replace the WiFi card easily one. My Gigabytes X570 and B550 platforms all replace the WiFi card with 8260/8265AC,RTL8822CE,Killer 1535 which can work on win7...it about $5. Also you can turn it off in the BIOS.
