Solved Changing default program for extension messes up the icon

Hi,

Everytime I try and change the default program for an extension to something else, its icon gets messed up.

For example,

I am using WinCDEmu ( WinCDEmu - A free CD/DVD emulator for Win32 and Win64 ), and want to mount an .mdf, but unfortunately, the .mdf has not been automatically associated, so I manually do it in Default Program. But when I am done, the icon for the file gets messed up and looks like this:



The icon, should look like this though:



What can I do to fix the icon issue?

It happens . The file will take load of the file icon of the default program associated . If you shift from WMP to VLC as your default music player, it will also happen .

There is no way to get back unless you get back to default default application .

Anyway, it's not an issue . It's natural .

Hi,

But thats really stupid though, why is it kept like this? I'm pretty sure there has to be someway, just that I don't know of it. Anyone else know a fix to this?

Hello Slasher,

Since you are using a 3rd party program as the default program for the .mdf file extension, you could use step 4 in the tutorial below to specify a icon yoyu want to be used instead for that file extension.

The Windows 7 icon (Option One in tutorial) that you wanted to use for this is at the location below.

C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll,-30

Thank you very much for trying to help me. But I have a problem, while doing your steps, on number 6, i can not see any DefaultIcon folder in the vmnt.exe

What does it show as the data value in step 4 for that file extension?

Could you post a screenshot of this?

If you have the location below, could you post a screenshot of it as well?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\vmnt.exe

As a test, you might right click on vmnt.exe, click on New and Key, type DefaultIcon, and do step 6 with it to see if it may change it for you. If, not then delete the DefaultIcon key just added and try using step 3 to see if it may work.

It seems that what I am seeing differs from the screenshot on No. 6, as I have a REG_SZ string, and in the screenshot in step No. 6, its a REG_EXPAND_SZ.

Go ahead and try it anyway in the new DefaultIcon key you created to see if it will work. It shouldn't matter about the string value.
