Simple, Clean and Easy To Open…

We approached the packaging for Windows 7 the same way we approached the product – by listening to what our customers told us they wanted: make it a simple clean design, easy to open, and reduce waste.



Simple Design

Customers told us they liked the big bold Windows logo and how it clearly communicates that it’s Windows 7. They like larger typefaces to make it easy to read and they like background colors for each edition to make it easier to differentiate between Windows 7 Home Premium all the way to Windows 7 Ultimate. In their own words, the “clean” design gives off a “fresh” feel.

Make It Easy To Open

We’ve reduced the number of elements in the package down to three: the plastic case, the paper sleeve, and a simple Getting Started Guide. The plastic case opens easily like a standard DVD case and it will have a single easy-to-remove seal at the top - And that’s it!



Reduce Waste

The plastic case protecting the Windows 7 disk is lighter and is recyclable. The packaging itself has a 37% weight reduction and a 50% improvement on it’s econometrics score over the predecessor.

Essentially, this packaging is what customers told us they were most interested in picking up to learn more about Windows 7. We hope you do the same.

I ended up with a new avatar upon seeing that one while checking up on things. As expected MS will continue to use the basic wrapping without any spectacular new look for 7's retail boxes.

The move to plastic cases starting with Vista was a much needed improvement over the old cardboard sleeve idea. If you should happen to drop the case the disk will generally survive the impact while the old cardboard sleeve would simply bend and the disk could be damaged.

Plus you are far less apt to see a disk scratched up since you remove the disk upward rather then sliding it out on one side. One little bit of dirt or debris and scratched up disk you got with those.

The plastic case offers a bit more impact protection from any thinner sleeves if you end up dropping the disk on the floor or someone comes along and places something on top. "oh noooo... i spilled my morning coffee and it got into the sleeve!"

On the other hand, "who spilled something on my 7 dvd case over here? hey!" where you simply wipe off the outside.

Plus it's no longer a plastic case slid into a cardboard sleeve as seen with Vista. They simply add an insert inside the case itself. Saves on paper making that more environmentally friendly.

It is 'less likely' to break.

Plus you have a higher chance of finding it if you misplace it. Its easier to find bigger objects then smaller ones.

Try acetone (nail polish remover) It becomes asticky mess

You've never heard of scratched disks? With a sleeve with one end always open a simple drop on the floor could easily see one little piece of debris get caught in it right up against the side of the disk you don't want anything touching. ut oh! ssccratcchhh... :shock: aw crap!

Not everyone has a nice carpeted floor under their station for things like "ESD"! and other factors while running or working on cases. A good impact on the side of a disk extended slightly out of a sleeve can pose a problem if the disk ends up with a crack in the material. Stranger things have happened!

And what happens if you should happen to see something(any liquid actually) spilled on a cardboard which still amounts to paper sleeve? It ends rather soggy fast! At least a plastic casing can be wiped off and even washed clean and dried if that should happen.

("gee? now where did that disk sleeve slip off to I wonder? if I had a slightly larger plastic casing... )

Personally for storage & safety I would want the plastic case as for reasons stated above.
I got a LOT of DVD's & I want my Windows 7 Ultimate investment to stand out from the rest of them!
It will make it easy to find.

I wonder if you'll be able to copy the DVD without DRM removal programs? :sarc:
Would be good because I really don't want to use the original for anything other than to make my installation disk Copy!

I've done this with every single game & OS I've ever owned. Keeps them Safe & in Excellent condition!

Hi all
This is still TOO MUCH packaging
After all how many of you actually travel with the DVD install disc - these days just copy the ISO to a USB or even on to the computers hard disc.

I think ALL my excessively packaged DVD's have long since been copied to HD and the packaging sent back not to Landfill but to the Retailer.


The concern over "packaging to protect the Disc" is just 100% dog poo.

If the EU had any sense it would pursue companies - especially Supermarkets who use excessive packaging rather than messing around with stupid things like should Windows ship with IE included etc etc.

You can still produce a nice Bold LOGO on a standard DVD jewell case -- we don't need those horrible thick cases anymore (not that we ever did in the first place)

The case packaging is fine, for those who think it is too much then listen to this..

Would you rather have a bulky case and protected disc, or a small case and a broken disc so you have to go out and buy a new disc, and run the chance of that breaking too?

I look at that and make the comparison to what XP came in. At least MS smartened up for 7 rather then the lame sleeves previously used for XP! Even the Vista OEM disks came in a smart plastic case inserted into a sleeve rather then only a sleeve.
