Checkboxes on Win7 desktop icons - need it removed, tried folder optio

I see checkboxes in a green square box at the left bottom corner of desktop icons (for xls, txt, jpg etc.) in Win 7. This is annoying. How do I remove this? Is it a malware? I tried Start > Folder options > View..doesn't work.

1. Press Windows Logo Key + E to open Windows Explorer.
2. Click Organize then Folders and Search Options then View tab.
3. Untick Use checkboxes to select items then hit OK.

Hmm, he says:" in a green square box at the left bottom corner ". But the option in the view tab in folder and search options produces checkboxes in the left top - and they are not green.

I was thinking out loud. It seems as though OP might have tried the Folder Options. The explanation isn't exactly clear Start > Folder Options > View, so I thought what else might the OP be seeing but described in different terms.

Start > Search Box > Folder Options > View might be more accurate. Eh... we all have shorthand.

Do you have any 3rd party backup software or perhaps one provided by your ISP?

Edit: A quick Google for Green Checkbox returned Norton 360, Mozy, and McAfee. When I switched to Google search images, Norton seemed to fit your description.

Post back a screenshot of these checkboxes using the Snipping Tool in Start menu, attach in reply box using the paper clip.

If you've already deselected checkboxes in Folder Options then it may be OEM crapware interfering as it does in so many ways, ruining Win7 perfect native performance so most users who buy PC's never get to experience it - until they Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

To find out now establish a Clean Boot, check your System file integrity, check for malware from the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Clean install might be a bit overkill at this point, but it always is an option.

Besides Norton, there are also other apps that add an overlay to indicate the status of some operation (i.e. dropbox sync)

Green Tick or Blue Arrows Icon Overlay Displayed for Files in Windows Explorer

One of our readers wrote telling that in Windows Explorer some files are shown with tick mark in a green box and some with chevron in a blue box regardless of the file type. Here is a screenshot explaining the situation.

After Googling the GUIDs, it was noted that the entries were added by Norton 360. Norton 360 v2 adds a feature called "Backup Status Indicators" which clearly identifies which files have been backed up, which files are pending backup and which are excluded from backup. This feature is responsible for the Tick mark (green box) and double arrow (blue box) overlay icons.

A check in a green box means the file’s backup is current, while a chevron (») character in a blue box indicates a file that’s been changed since its last backup. Files excluded from the backup set display a slash in a gray box.

I disagree that a Clean Reinstall is ever overkill if the current OS is factory pre-installed Win7.

Such an install is hobbled by corrupting, badly written bloatware and useless duplicate utilities that interfere with better versions in Win7.

Users stuck with this have the worst possible install one can have. Many have literally never experienced Win7 in its native perfect form.

For this reason most tech enthusiasts will Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Countless thousands we have helped reinstall would never consider going back.

Thanks for all the responses.I tried the uncheck "View folder options" like Ztrucker mentioned here. I didn't complete the sentence, but that's what I did.

screenshot attached. Yes, I have Norton AV. These tick marks appeared one fine day..hence my surprise.

Those look similar to Skydrive Sync checkmarks which appear when you Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Forums.

However they're not exact and wouldn't also have the blue alternative arrow shown.

Do you have a Sync program, perhaps some factory OEM crapware running which you may not know about? If unsure I'd establish a Clean boot so that the only thing starting with Win7 is your AV - step 3 in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

If you'd like to have complete control of the OS with no such mysteries I'd abandon the Factory preinstall for true native perfect Win7 with a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7, or at least Clean Up Factory Bloatware

What version Norton are you running and is it Norton 360?

Why they started appearing is another mystery, assuming of course that they are Norton related.
