Solved Checking to see if Re-install is only option

HI All
Back again after long absence but now OK again!!!!
Bit of a problem. Got the dreaded BSOD and it was reporting a Memory integrity test failure so no matter what cannot get passed the BSOD. However, I can load Ubuntu from a CD and get to my data files, I have everything backed up anyway. I'm thinking that a complete re-install of Win 7 will probably cure the probelm as if it were a memory failure would Ubuntu still work OK?

The Memtest is running OK and has been for about an hour. It is still showing 0 Pass but am getting a bit worried as in the errors column it is showing 22815712. Is this normal?

That doesn't seem normal at all. You have problems with the RAM. You need to test whether this is in a particular memory module or with the controller.

The best way to test this is with one stick at a time in each of the slots. You can then get a good idea if the problem is limited to one stick or if no sticks work in any slot it may be the controller.

Hi John and Welcome Back!

Follow the steps in Jonathan's tutorial closely as it will show you how to test both the RAM and the slots by process of elimination. You may have a bad stick or slot and need to know exactly which one.

Once you eliminate the bad stick, google your computer or mobo model + memory upgrade to see what your options are, read up on it fully, run the Crucial memory advisor, to determine with certainty how much you want and that the specs are correct before ordering. This can be done in person at the counter at a parts-oriented store like CompUSA which may cost a bit more (not always) but saves time.

Thanks Greg. I this country Amazon.co.uk is relatively good value and has a wide range. I got 8GB Crucial SODIMM laptop memory last week for £35. It took 3 day to arrive but that was Royal Mail's fault. Piriform Speccy can ID the memory details for you. Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Good advice given.

Yes, 22 million errors is saying the RAM has a problem.

First take out the RAM and clean the connectors with alcohol and a lint free cloth.
Re-seat and test again, if you get any errors you can stop the test.

Follow Gregs advice and test the RAM cards one by one to find the culprit.
Jon's tutorial is a good explanation on how to do this.

If your still getting errors, one error is too many, then you will need to replace the RAM.
Sometimes errors can be resolved by adjusting the RAM settings, since OEM computers have a locked down BIOS you won't be able to do this.

Crucial is good RAM to get for a Dell, they guarantee their RAM to work in Dell computers.
The Crucial site has a RAM finder, just enter your Dell info and the RAM you need will come up.

One thing I found when I had memory problems. All the BSODs had corrupted my installation(unrepairable errors in SFC /SCANNOW). Fortunately I had an image that was trouble free.

Many thanks to all. I followed the advice to the letter. Located the rogue memory module. Decided that as it was one of the pair of 1GB modules I would upgrade to a pair of 2GB modules. Located the ones I needed on the Crucial site, ordered them last night and expect delivery within the next two days. All in all a very good result. Many thanks all!
