Hello all.

I just got a promotional copy of the Windows 7 Ultimate x64, under the New Efficiency Program. I am a Microsoft Student Partner.

I just verified the md5 and sha1 of the ISO file I created, and they don't check out with the versions on the MSDN site, since the code is different. The DVD I got is akin to that distributed under the Windows 7 Launch Party program.

My question is, if the promotional DVD has the same content as the Retail one, why are there different checksums for them? Is there any difference between the promotional and the retail versions or what?

I know I shouldn't be picky since I got this DVD directly from MS, but I am used to verifying checksums and if they don't match, it feels weird :(

My SHA1 for the ISO I made from the DVD: 00def0020d1b0648ed2dc3a89b2cd275da176448

none of the numbers for versions on technet look like yours but if you google 00def0020d1b0648ed2dc3a89b2cd275da176448 i get lots of hits for Win7.ULTIMATE.retail_House.party and Windows 7 Ultimate Signature Edition x64-ENG

cant find anything official from Microsoft though :(

my en_windows_7_professional_x64_dvd_x15-65805 is 3.0gb

and my en_windows_7_ultimate_x64_dvd_x15-65922 is also 3.0gb

This is what is puzzling me. I am so used to verifying checksums that I find it weird now to install it without them matching the ones on the Technet site.

right off the bat I would probably think that your copy is ok... you got it from a reputable source... I think the risk in using it is minimable...

:D It can't get any more reputable than this. I got a DHL Priority all the way from Redmond itself. I may be sounding too obnoxious, but something feels missing since there is no match for my SHA1 and the only places there is: on warez sites!

If you got it directly from MS, then what is your concern?? Install it and enjoy Windows 7.. ;)

My only concern is: If the promotional and the retail versions are the exactly same, why is there a difference in the checksums.

My SHA1 for the ISO I made from the DVD

If you made the ISO yourself then it wont match

Why would that be if both were made under Windows and both in the ISO format?

When you downloaded a file, your not creating it but merely copying it so the hash will match.

The ISO you created from the DVD is not the original file so it doesn't match the original hash, you created that file so it creates a new hash.

If anyone could create a file and have it match another file's signature that was created somewhere else then it defeats the point of hashing altogether.

Oh. I never knew about this, I thought that considering the format was the same in both the cases (ISO), the SHA1 would match. Thanks.

They sent you the Ultimate Signature edition, without the signature.

It may be their standard promo copy.
