Last week I took a little video of the cheese counters at my supermarket.
First you see the row of cash registers (I think there are 45), then the cheese counter where you are being served and then the self service part. My hand was not very steady, but you get an idea. I love cheese and that's what I miss the most when I am in the US.

As far as I know you can only make cheese in the US from pasteurized milk (FDA rule). That's like trying to make wine from cooked grape juice - all you get is "stuff". I have never seen e.g. a Camembert during my 15 years in the US - only stuff that falsely carried the name. And most of the other 600 kinds of cheeses I can buy here you cannot get at all - just a very few, e.g. Roquefort which is interesting because that is made from raw ewe's milk.

I wasn't aware of that. I've uploaded it to Flickr. It's the famous "Land of Chocolate" segment from The Simpsons. Gave me a good chance to test out the new beta of Windows Live Movie Maker. Very nice and easy to use.
Cheese has gone the way of a lot of food items in the UK. We used to have a fairly limited choice but then along came supermarkets and French and other European cheeses started appearing.
This has led to a rediscovery of home grown specialist cheeses. I can now buy half a dozen made in my own county including the truly lovely Garstang Blue.
