Chess and the future!

Someone on here kindly gave me the means to install Windows 7 games on Windows 10 quite a while ago. It now no longer works - Windows 10 has had a number of big updates since then.


I am really just whingeing about the demise of the best Chess program (on Windows 7). Yes i still have alaptop with Windows 7 but my main computer is on Windows 10 and Windows 7 won't be supported after 2019. So I could just get out a different laptop to play chess on but want everything on my main computer!


I have tried loads of Chess alternatives. The ones in the Windows 10 app store are all rubbish - not to mention the flashy adverts. An article recommended Giant Chess (not free) which I "donated" to to install. It does look very similar to Windows 7 chess - a familiar look and method of use. However it isnt the same - what made W7 Chess special was the programming. In all other programs I've used - including Giant Chess - the "easy" level is too hard to make it enjoyable. On Windows 7 Chess I enjoyed starting at the easy level, improving and getting gradually up to higher levels. But when the easy level gets you in Checkmate in 2 minutes every time its no fun.


So I give up - there is no replacement for Windows 7 Chess - and I will keep Windows 7 on at least one laptop even after support ends - just for this program - which I love and I know is very popular among many.

The old games are still, (at least they were a few days ago), available with Winaero Tweaker

Downloads / Software / Winaero Tweaker it's an additional download from within the tweaker app, so you could grab the download for the games and then uninstall the tweaker, although it does contain a lot of useful tweaks to Windows 10

Thanks. I installed them from the file I had but they just won't run on Windows 10 now.

Strange, I'm running the latest 1809 Windows 10 and the games work including chess



There was a revision to the Winaero Tweaker program for 1803 release and this is the latest download after I installed 1809, could be there are mods to the latest download which are required to make them work on the latest releases of Win 10 so best to download the latest installer

There are reports of issues with 1809 release with various programs on a few systems.

There could be issues if you are on 1809, I have not seen anything major, but it worked fine on 1803 with the download issued when 1803 was released

Win7Games4Win10_8_81_v2 is the name of the Zip file I have working Creation date is 25 ‎October ‎2018, ‏‎23:15:11

Should be the download at Windows 7 games for Windows 10 Anniversary Update and above

If you save that download link and wait a day or two after a new feature update is released then if a new version is needed it should be available for download
